How Colorado’s independent Wolf Creek ski area plans to navigate a coronavirus reopening
Unlike Vail Resorts, which last week announced a reservation system that requires pass holders to book high-season ski days well in advance, Wolf Creek is adjusting its pricing
×
Almost 4,200 Wolf Creek skiers responded to a survey sent by the ski area’s owner, Davey Pitcher.
They were largely from New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma as well as surrounding communities like Pagosa Springs and South Fork. Typical Wolf Creek skiers.
They all said, heck yeah they wanted to ski this season. And they were ready to do whatever it takes to get on the lifts. Masks, social distancing and drastically changed food service that would largely entail dining in cars and parking lots were just fine if it meant they could ski.
“It’s encouraging they were willing to modify their behavior this winter,” Pitcher said.
And a majority said they would use a reservation system.
Pitcher last week submitted an operating plan to his local public health department proposing a self-imposed cap of 5,000 skiers a day at the 1,600-acre ski area. His capacity is 6,800 skiers.
He’s offering a premium pass without any blackout days. A midtier pass that has some blackout days and a discount pass that pretty much limits access to weekdays.
×
Buyers of the Wolf Creek premium pass must reserve their ski day 12 hours ahead of time to guarantee a spot. While he hasn’t set pricing just yet, Pitcher estimates that a premium pass will cost around $1,500, up from $780 last year. The midrange pass will be more affordable and the weekday pass – with some blackout dates during spring break – will be cheaper than anything he sold last season.
Purchasers of day tickets – available only online – also will be able to lock in their spot. He’s expanded the number of “local appreciation” days when tickets are priced around $56.

Unincorporated community in Oregon, United States
Wolf Creek is an unincorporated community in Josephine County, Oregon, United States, just off Interstate 5.
There are a number of creeks in Oregon named Wolf Creek, after the wolves that were once abundant in the state. Wolf Creek post office was established 1882, while a railroad station called “Almaden” was located in the same place in 1883.[1] The station was renamed to match the post office in 1888, and in 1895 the post office was renamed to “Wolfcreek” until 1951.[1]
The pioneer-era “Six Bit House” was an inn located on the Applegate Trail that passed through the Wolf Creek area long before it had a post office.[1][2] The original Six Bit House was probably built in 1853, near a hairpin turn of the Southern Pacific Railroad.[1] The inn went through several incarnations until the present Wolf Creek Tavern was built in about 1883.[1] The site, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is now run by the Oregon State Parks and Recreation Department as the Wolf Creek Inn State Heritage Site and is the oldest continuously operating hotel in the state.[2]
Climate [ edit ]
This region experiences warm (but not hot) and dry summers, with no average monthly temperatures above 71.6 °F (22.0 °C). According to the Köppen climate classification system, Wolf Creek has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, abbreviated “Csb” on climate maps.[3]

What family-friendly amenities does your resort offer?
With Wolf Creek being family-owned and operated, we are conscious of making things easier for families. Wolf Creek has ticket and lesson sales in one central location. Children ages 5-8 who participate in ski school, have their own special building where everything they need. The Wolf Pup Building (children’s ski school) has rentals, lesson area, lifts, a dining area with chef, and restrooms all in one convenient location.
The Base Camp Building located next to the Raven Lift is where families can bring up picnic lunches and enjoy a spacious, open atmosphere and large outside deck. Families often use this lodge as a meeting point.
Wolf Creek offers free shuttle service to complement the free paved parking. Families are picked up and dropped off by the Ticket Office and returned to their cars at the end of the day free of charge.

What area (off-mountain) activities would appeal to families for their winter vacation?
In both Pagosa Springs and Del Norte are two microbreweries. Before soaking in the hot springs, visiting one of the microbreweries with delicious pub-style cuisine is a must. Enjoy a Cabrito Burger with an award-winning brew from the Riff Raff in Pagosa. If you’re staying on the East side stop by Three Barrel Brewery and sip on the winter lager Freeze Cat and munch on a wood-fired pizza or Stromboli. You’ll enjoy the springs much more with a full stomach from one of these hidden treasure eateries.
Soaking in the “healing waters” of Pagosa Springs is a must-do, especially after a hard day on the slopes. There are two locations in Pagosa Springs that include The Overlook and The Springs.
