Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center

Quilting by the Lake (QBL) began in 1981 as a four-day quilting conference in Cazenovia, NY, and has grown into a two-week, internationally recognized quilting event attracting over 200 participants from around the country and overseas. From the beginning, QBL recruited some of the most innovative and legendary quilters to teach, and that tradition continues today. Classes are offered in design, techniques and surface design. No matter what your style – traditional, art, or modern – all quilters are welcome.

Quilting by the Lake consists of two one-week sessions running July 18 to July 29. Sessions begin on Sundays and classes kick-off on Mondays. QBL offers 2-Day, 3-Day, and 5-Day classes, and programs throughout the week, including lectures, trunk shows, mini-markets, and a gallery visit to the Schweinfurth Art Center.

Many of our participants have been attending QBL for 10, 15 or over 20 years. One of the longest running quilt conferences in the country, QBL continues to be a special community treasured for its creative environment and camaraderie. In addition to classes, the sessions include lectures, trunk shows, and other activities. A highlight of each session is the final Class Show & Tell program on Friday night. The evening is always punctuated with humor, and includes raffle drawings and a faculty apron auction to benefit the QBL Scholarship Fund.

The atmosphere at QBL is friendly and casual, and participants enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, NY. Facilities are modern, accessible, and air-conditioned. Housing is in single rooms in suite-style dorms with 4-5 people per suite. Meals are served in the campus cafeteria.

REGISTER FOR QUILT CAMP

Time to get away and relax with fellow quilters in a beautiful woodland setting. Start planning your projects and mark your calendars for this fantastic event!

The camp quilt will utilize the Strip Tube Triangle ruler that we have used the past few years. There are so many quilt patters that can be made using this ruler and strip sets! Learn the tricks for confidently sewing blocks cut on the bias.

We will have several short demonstrations throughout the week including a stash buster quilt that will help perfect your border sewing skills and is a great beginner project if you are a newbie.

This quilt pattern is deceptively easy to make, Simplicity II from Cozy Quiltz. Dig through your bin of 2 ½’’ strips to make light and dark pairs. The above quilt used 10 pairs to yield 20 blocks that finish at 8’’. The pattern used the Strip Tube Ruler from Cozy Quiltz. The Companion Angle Ruler works great as well!

Demonstrations this year will include how to use the Strip Tube ruler including a variation on the above quilt pattern. Sandy will also show some tricks and shortcuts using some of the other common rulers most quilters have.

Fabric requirements will be emailed out to participants prior to the event. The sample quilt is 42 x 50 (4 blocks/row, 5 rows = 20 blocks) plus borders. A jelly roll will yield at least 20 strip sets, or 40 blocks (Twin size).

Pressing and cutting stations will be set up. Small irons at your sewing area are allowed. Meals are included and we encourage you to bring a snack to share.

Saturday night show and tell includes door prize drawings and other fun.

A packing list will be sent out prior to the event, but please plan to bring your general sewing supplies (don’t forget the power cord for your machine!) A cushion for your chair or even your own sewing chair from home is nice to have.

Please contact Sandy Carlson if you have any questions ([email protected]).

2019 will be a busy quilting year for me. I love hanging out with people who have the same passion. Here are some things to consider when planning your new year.

Memphis Festival

Plan a trip to Memphis this Summer! I am heading up a quilt festival in Memphis that debuts on May 10. We are bringing in the Masterworks: Abstract and Geometric show in from SAQA. In addition, we have issued a challenge to quilters, makers and artists within a 200 mile radius of Memphis to make up to three quilts. The quilts will be three layers, stitched, 24” x 24” in BLUE. I have children making quilts, woodworkers making quilts, artists making quilts and quilters making quilts. It should be a glorious blue room full of stitching. We are reaching all the guilds, sewing circles and artist groups in the area to focus on BLUE for a little while.

Are you within a 200 mile radius of Memphis? Enter the show! Click here for a link to the submission form. The show will be housed in the beautiful Crosstown Concourse art galleries. The two shows will hang from May 10-July 28, 2019. Visit Memphis. Good food, good music, the mother of all rivers — You won’t be disappointed. And in May the azaleas are in bloom.

Schweinfurth Art Center reschedules Quilting by the Lake conference to fall

Auburn, NY (May 6, 2020) – The Schweinfurth Art Center is canceling its annual two-week summer art quilt conference, Quilting by the Lake (QBL), due to the COVID-9 pandemic. However, staff has rescheduled many of the workshops to be held at the art center in October. The two-, three-, and five-day classes will be held between Oct. 13 and 30, 2020.

“We love seeing our regular participants year after year and welcoming newcomers to the fold,” said Schweinfurth Executive Director Donna Lamb. “That’s why it was so hard for us to make the decision to cancel Quilting by the Lake. But we wanted to still offer our intensive classes taught by internationally known instructors while still keeping our participants and staff safe.”

Lamb said that classes will be smaller and the Art Center will be following protocols for social distancing and cleaning.

Quilting by the Lake Schweinfurth Edition (QBLS) will include many classes and teachers originally scheduled for QBL, along with previously scheduled Studio Schweinfurth workshops. Classes will be held in the Barbara Feinstein Sewing Studio and Davis Family Gallery, both on the art center’s second floor, and the basement wet studio, which includes large sinks and two washers and dryers.

“One of the advantages we have is our large classrooms, and we will be setting them up with social distancing in mind,” said Schweinfurth Program Director Davana Robedee. “Everyone will have plenty of space. With fewer classes and participants overall, these sessions will be smaller gatherings.”

Cost of the workshops range from $290 for a two-day workshop to $630 for a five-day session. For more information on classes or to register, link to our website at www.quiltingbythelake.com. The website also has links to hotels and other Auburn-area accommodations.
