Kettlepop

Popped in small batches by hand using just a few organic and non-GMO ingredients, KettlePOP is the very first and ORIGINAL kettle corn.

Old time “sugar corn” has been around for hundreds of years. The old time sugar corn that our ancestors ate was just that “Old Time Sugar Corn,” not kettle corn! Contrary to popular belief, Kettle Corn does have a beginning… and it began with KettlePOP!

You may have noticed on many web pages that “a Missouri farmer” or a “Midwestern farmer” popped sugar corn in a large cast iron kettle over a wood fire and began selling it at various shows. That farmer is Bill Mann, father to Gary Mann who is President of The Original Kettle Korn™. In 2008, Gary Mann retired from the kettle corn business and passed on the reigns of superior quality kettle corn equipment to the next generation of kettle corn experts, KettlePOP.

Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Kettlepop IS kettle corn. With decades of combined experience in kettle corn production, manufacturing, packaging, sales, and distribution; the KettlePOP team knows kettle corn and knows the kettle corn business! It’s what we do!

KettlePOP has been, and continues to be, an iconic fixture at farmer’s markets, and is proud to offer their kettle popped corn, in organic Kettle Corn and Sea Salt varieties at retailers nationwide. These organic varieties are hand-popped in a fire-burning with the same attention and care given to our farmer’s market batches.

KettlePOP’s Sea Salt variety, made with just three ingredients: organic corn, organic sea salt, and organic soy bean oil, contains just 55 calories per cup and zero grams of sugar.

Our signature Kettle Corn is made with the same three organic ingredients as the Sea Salt, with the addition of the finest organic cane sugar. It contains just 67 calories and eight grams of sugar per cup.

Both the Sea Salt and Kettle Corn varieties are a great gluten-free source of whole grains, containing over sixteen grams per serving. The amazing taste combined with the low calorie, and high nutritional content make KettlePOP an ideal treat for popcorn lovers and dieters alike.

KettlePOP isn’t satisfied with just being the ORIGINAL KettleCorn; we employ a three-stage quality assurance technique to ensure that our kettle corn is also the very BEST on earth:

How To Start a Kettle Corn Concession Trailer

Concession Trailer VS Tent

Kettle corn is not just a snack, but nostalgia in a bag. It’s a food item that brings us back to simpler times and enjoyed regularly by people of all ages. From an operations perspective there’s also a lot to like about this time tested concession business too!For one, kettle corn businesses can focus on one doing one core product really well. There are a lot of vendors that try to do too many things on their truck or trailer. One challenge is that there’s only so much space to cook complex menu items on a trailer. There are many first-time vendors that get in over their heads and overwhelmed by trying to do too much on their vehicle.Another challenge is that the more menu items you have, the less time there is to really think about the ingredients and how you plan to execute. If you only have one core item to create, whether it’s burgers, pizza, or in this case kettle corn, you’re going to get better and more consistent at making your product overtime.Kettle corn also has very good profit margins. It’s not uncommon to be able to sell a large bag of kettle corn from $5 – $7. The cost of this including the popcorn and bag is often between $1.00 – $1.50 to the operator meaning you could end up with making a profit of around of a whopping $5.00 per bag. That’s an extremely attractive margin of profit compared to other food businesses that would be happy to make a mere 33% from each sale. Finally, there’s not a lot of ingredients that you need to run this business. To make kettle corn you’ll need kernels, vegetable or canola oil, sugar, and salt. Kettle corn is more about the process than the actual ingredients. If you want to jazz up the corn with chocolate, caramel or nuts that is also an option. If all this wasn’t attractive enough, your product spoilage will be minimal. If your kernels are being stored in a dry environment at room temperature it can be stored for over a year without compromising quality. This longevity is not possible with other food businesses.

More About This Business

If you are planning to start a kettle corn business, you do not need to invest in a trailer. You can operate the business just fine with a pop-up tent and many businesses choose to operate in this way permanently. If you want to operate with a pop-up tent, you can often start your business with a really nice setup for around $10,000. Not bad for a business that you could easily recoup the investment in just a few months! There are some clear benefits to operating with a concession trailer that we will outline here, however. First, setup and cleanup is easier with a trailer. With a pop-up tent, you will need to transport the kettle corn machine, tables, in a trailer or a truck anyway. If you’re planning to vend often, setting up a tent and all the other equipment can easily take an hour for prep and cleanup. Those are hours where you are not generating sales or making money. With a concession trailer, you can essentially open up the serving windows and doors to be open for business. Taking a bit more time for setup may not seem like a big deal now, but after operating for a few months these are the things that can really start to tire you out so make sure to consider this in advance. Also, if weather turns bad and rain clouds appear overhead, you can quickly close the doors to your trailer and take off. Closing up shop with a popup stand is no quick task.Due to the limited amount of equipment that needs to be installed on a kettle corn concession trailer, getting started is usually a lot less expensive than other mobile food businesses as well. Almost every other type of business has refrigeration needs. This is not the case with kettle corn, unless you want to sell old fashioned sodas as an add-on product. For this business you will need a kettle corn maker, 3 compartment sink (due to health requirements), storage area, mixing paddle, and a stainless steel receiving kettle.

If you are planning to have a trailer built for a kettle corn business or just using a pop-up tent, one thing you’ll want to keep in mind is the “entertainment factor” of this business. People don’t just want to eat your kettle corn–as delicious as it may be–they want to see you stirring the corn, cooking it in the traditional fashion, and smelling the sugary kettle corn. With that in mind, make sure that your customers are able to see you making the popcorn. More people will shell out a few bucks to enjoy your kettle corn if you do this.

With that in mind, consider your full brand. People usually think about the “good old days” with kettle corn. It may not be a bad idea to play this up with your brand reflects this too. Make sure your uniforms are clean. Wear an apron. Consider getting branded hats that every employee wears. This will separate you from other vendors in your area whether you’re planning to operate at a farmer’s market, charity event, or festival.

If you’re interested in getting a custom-made kettle corn trailer built, don’t hesitate to reach out to us at M&R Specialty Trailers and Trucks or call 904-397-0246. We’ve helped hundreds of mobile food entrepreneurs get their start and provide support after the sale.

The History of Kettle Corn

Kettle corn is an all-American favorite salty-sweet snack often sold at festivals, carnivals, and other events. But where did this flavor of popcorn come from and how did it grow in popularity?

Kettle corn dates back to the 18th century, its first documented appearance originating in Europe. European farmers would cook corn in large cast iron kettles over an open fire. Both lard and sugar were added while the popcorn was cooking, which resulted in a sweet snack that was often eaten at the end of the day. Thanks to the sugar in kettle corn, it was discovered during this time that kettle popcorn had a good shelf life.

German and European immigrants brought this sweet treat to America in the mid to late 1700s. In America, this snack was first referenced in the diaries of Dutch immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania. Kettle corn at this time was also made in Dutch ovens, in addition to cast iron kettles. During this time, kettle corn, much like today, was sold during festive occasions, such as fairs and festivals. Sometimes kettle corn was sweetened with honey rather than sugar.

In the early to mid 19th century, kettle corn was hugely popular in America, however it saw a lapse in widespread popularity in the 1900s. Nevertheless, kettle corn made its comeback in the 2000s, particularly at historical reenactments of the Civil War and similar events.

Today, kettle corn is still in touch with its roots, as the snack is sold during street fairs and festivals. Sometimes kettle corn is still made in the traditional way, with a cast iron kettle, but it can also be made in popcorn poppers or kettle-corn specific machines. You can also get kettle corn in convenience stores, supermarkets, or online stores, like Popcorn for the People.

Kettle Corn Vs. Regular Popcorn

Popcorn is one of the most popular snacks on the planet. Its iconic existence is not just found at the movie theater; people have popcorn at a wide range of occasions and doctors are telling you to choose the fat free version of the snack for its amazing health benefits.

We can say there is not much that is controversial about popcorn except for the distinction between kettle corn and popcorn.

For some, when referencing kettle corn it gets lumped right in with the traditional bags of kernels we’ve grown to love and snack on. However, the two are certainly not the same.

Kettle corn is a specific type of popcorn. Traditionally made kettle corn is cooked in a large iron kettle that has been oiled. Once popped, the popcorn is tossed with salt and sugar for a very unique flavor.

Popcorn on the other hand is made from a special variety of corn that has been grown to burst open and puff due to heat exposure. Traditional popcorn is a high fiber snack, but is typically sprinkled with salt and butter for a savory taste and texture.

You can purchase traditional popcorn just about anywhere. For kettle corn, this type of popcorn is most commonly found pre-made at fairs and carnivals or you can attend these events and have it made to order for you.

Regardless of which type of popcorn you choose, this snack has been a favorite for centuries and both flavors provide the perfect snack option.

If you have an upcoming event and are looking for a unique treat or snack option, our popcorn concession machines deliver fresh popcorn for you and your guests to eat.

We rent our quality machines for affordable pricing and we give you all that you need to make delicious popcorn.

Our Popcorn

Our popcorn is hand cooked fresh on site using our specially designed kettle (popcorn machine known in America as a kettle corn machine). Apart from a perfect cooking technique, it is very important to use the absolute best ingredients possible to get the most flavour and results. Popcorn Man has sourced an Australian farmer who grows our special type of popping corn (GMO Free) and we are proud to announce we are the only producers of popcorn in Australia to use this. Our popcorn kernals are always from fresh harvest and stored in double-walled bags to ensure they remain perfectly fresh!

You may be surprised to know that our popcorn is peanut, tree nut, dairy* and gluten free. We also refrain from using products obtained from animals and are therefore completely vegan. As nearly all silos used for popcorn in Australia, are also used in the production of Australian peanuts. It is hard to find another Australian popcorn product which is peanut free. We have seen others state that no nuts were added, however we feel this is unethical and potentially dangerous so please be aware.

We use what we think is the best available oil for our popcorn production. Ricebran oil has one of the highest smoke points available and does not leave a foul taste like other oils can do. As the smoke point is just above the popping temperature of popcorn, it is not converted to a nasty trans fat. Trans fat is the bad fat and unfortunately due to the Food Safety labeling requirements, it can be hidden from the nutrition labels if the producer decides to use the nutritional results from the ingredients rather than the lab results of the final product.

The popcorn that made us famous

Our signature product: Sweet ‘n’ Salty popcorn, has been our top seller from day one. As the name suggests it is sweet and salty at the same time. It sounds wrong, but it is the flavour to die for we have been told. The popcorn is glazed in a thin coating of sugar, then lightly salted using salt which does not contain anti-caking agents. It is basically a tweaked version of ****corn (Known around the world as Kettle Corn. Due to Kettle Chips – the holders of the Trademark for the word Kettle in the grains category, Kettle Corn cannot be used in Australia… We know what you are all thinking…). Some of our customers call it honey corn or salted caramel as Sweet ‘n’ Salty is in the same vicinity of tastes. Sweet and Salty popcorn is crunchy and moreish without being too heavy on your stomaches like caramel or heavy coated popcorn tends to do. Probably the best way to explain is for you to ask for a Free sample next time you see us.

* Some flavours that contain dairy are cooked and mixed in separate machines
