GENEVA GARDEN CLUB MEETINGS
The Geneva Garden Club meets on the first Tuesday of the month, September through May from 11:30 – 2:00. Meetings take place at the Stephen D. Persinger Recreation Center (SPRC) at 3507 Kaneville Rd, Geneva, IL. The September meeting is the annual Guest Luncheon and is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about the GGC. If you are interested in attending any of our general meetings or would like more information, please email us directly at [email protected].

The GGC has returned to in-person meetings at our normal location, the Stephen Persinger Center on Peck Road.
GGC PLANT SALE
From Our Gardens to Yours! The Geneva Garden Club is “going back to its roots” and having a plant sale on May 14th from 8:30-3:00 or until we sell out, whichever comes first. The sale will take place at 360 Kaneville Road, Geneva IL (the corner of Kaneville and South Street, just east of Randall Road.) Proceeds from this fundraiser will go toward our community projects including student scholarships and planters throughout Geneva. This is especially important since we have been unable to hold our “bigger” fundraisers the past 2 years due to Covid. We ask the community to come out and support our endeavors.

GGC 2022 SCHOLARSHIP
The Geneva Garden Club is proud to offer scholarships totaling up to $6000 to qualified Geneva students who intend to pursue an education in horticulture, landscaping, environmental sustainability or a closely related field. The deadline to apply has passed. The board is reviewing the applications and will notify the winner(s) in early April.
ALWAYS ON TUESDAY
During the summer months, members of the Geneva Garden Club enjoy spending Tuesday afternoons visiting in each other’s gardens. It’s a great way to relax, strengthen friendships, share recipes, get great gardening ideas, and of course, it’s “Always on Tuesday.” We are looking forward to summer 2022 and have started setting up the schedule. It is going to be a wonderful summer of visiting in gardens. We hope to see you there!
KANE COUNTY JAIL GARDEN
On Dec. 2, 2021, the Geneva Garden Club, along with other community churches and programs, was honored at Sheriff Hain’s Kane County Jail Volunteer Virtual Event. A moving slide show of volunteers working at the jail was presented that included many pictures of detainees working in the garden. Sheriff Hain expressed his gratitude to all the volunteers and is looking forward to having the Geneva Garden Club back again next summer. This unique program provides opportunities for select residents to learn about planting, maintaining, and harvesting vegetables and flowers. It has been a huge success and a highlight for the GGC members who have volunteered for the program.

GENEVA GARDEN CLUB PARK
Since the beginning, the greatest challenge at Geneva Garden Club Park was the lack of a water source. The Geneva Garden Club worked closely with the Geneva Park District and the City of Geneva to address this problem and are proud to say there is now a water source within the garden! However, Geneva Garden Club Park is once again under construction. Several large trees had to be removed which has changed the park from a shady location to more of a sunny garden. The Geneva Garden Club is working with the Geneva Park District to create a new landscape for the beloved park that sits on the Fox River above the dam. Garden Club Park is located one block north of State Street on North River Lane, next to Riverside Banquets.

The Geneva Garden Club proudly maintains the knuckle located downtown at the corner of 3rd & State Street in front of State Street Jewelers as part of our efforts to beautify the city of Geneva.
HISTORY OF GENEVA GARDEN CLUB
The Geneva Garden Club was founded in the fall of 1928 and is a member of the Garden Clubs of Illinois as well as the National Garden Clubs. A few years ago the Geneva Garden Club celebrated it’s 90th birthday. This is quite an accomplishment, and throughout its existence its goals have remained the same: beautification of the community, preservation of our natural environment, and the promotion of horticultural education. The club and its members have undertaken many projects over the years to further these goals.
Celestial and Earthly Treasures, a Garden Club of America Flower Show
The Lake Geneva Garden Club presents Celestial & Earthly Treasures, a GCA Flower Show to showcase the beauty and historical treasures that exist in the Geneva Lakes area. The Yerkes Astronomical Observatory was operated by the University of Chicago Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics from its founding in 1897 to 2020. Ownership was transferred to the non-profit Yerkes Future Foundation (YFF) in May 2020, which began restoration and renovation of the historic building and grounds.
The Yerkes 40-inch was the largest refracting-type telescope in the world when it was dedicated in 1897, historically significant in that the views from this telescope were recorded from the same vantage point for over 100 years. The landscape design on the property of the observatory was completed by the Olmsted Brothers, and a modified restoration of the original plan is currently in progress. Considered the father of landscape architecture, Frederick Law Olmsted designed urban parks, schools, cemeteries, national parks, and more throughout the United States. The Olmsted Brothers also executed their landscape designs for several estates around Geneva Lake in the early 1900s.
We’re excited that “the planets have aligned” in 2022 with both the national celebration of Olmsted’s 200th birthday along with the reopening of the newly restored Yerkes Observatory.
The flower show is open to the public and free of charge on Saturday, July 23 from 10 am – 4 pm and Sunday, July 24 from 10 am – 2 pm.
