Illumina Domine Blog – Devotion to The Holy Face

“May the Lord grant that in the new millennium, the Church will grow ever more in holiness, that she may become in history a true epiphany of the merciful and glorious Face of Christ the Lord.” –Pope St. John Paul II

Act of Consecration to the Holy Face

O Lord Jesus, we believe most firmly in You, we love You. You are the Eternal Son of God and the Son Incarnate of the Blessed Virgin Mary. You are the Lord and Absolute Ruler of all creation. We acknowledge You, therefore, as the Universal Sovereign of all creatures. You are the Lord and Supreme Ruler of all mankind, and we, in acknowledging this Your dominion, consecrate ourselves to You now and forever. Loving Jesus, we place our family under the protection of Your Holy Face, and of Your Virgin Mother Mary most sorrowful. We promise to be faithful to You for the rest of our lives and to observe with fidelity Your Holy Commandments. We will never deny before men, You and Your Divine rights over us and all mankind. Grant us the grace to never sin again; nevertheless, should we fail, O Divine Saviour, have mercy on us and restore us to Your grace. Radiate Your Divine Countenance upon us and bless us now and forever. Embrace us at the hour of our death in Your Kingdom for all eternity, through the intercession of Your Blessed Mother, of all Your Saints who behold You in Heaven, and the just who glorify You on earth. O Jesus, be mindful of us forever and never forsake us; protect our family. O Mother of Sorrows, by the eternal glory which you enjoy in Heaven, through the merits of your bitter anguish in the Sacred Passion of your Beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, obtain for us the grace that the Precious Blood shed by Jesus for the redemption of our souls, be not shed for us in vain. We love you, O Mary. Embrace us and bless us, O Mother. Protect us in life and in death. Amen.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Wishing you all a holy Lent under the gaze of the Holy Face of Jesus.

“All of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are being transformed into the same image.” (2 Cor 3:18) Prayer for Priests

“Eternal Father, we offer Thee, with the hands of Mary, the Holy Face of Jesus, Thy Son, and the entire generous holocaust of all that we are, in reparation for so many sins that are committed, and, especially, for offenses against the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar. We make this offering, in a particular way, so that Priests, by the holiness of their lives, may show the world the adorable features of the Divine Countenance shining with the light of truth and love, for the triumph of the Church, and for the spread of the Kingdom.” Bl. Mother Maria Pierina De Micheli, “Missionary of the Holy Face”

Prayer to the Holy Face by Pope St. John Paul II

Lord Jesus, Crucified and Risen; the image of the glory of the Father, Holy Face, which looks at us and searches for us, kind and merciful, You who call us to conversion and invite us for the fullness of love, we adore and bless You. In Your Luminous Face, we learn to love and to be loved, to find freedom and reconciliation, to promote peace, which radiates from You and leads to You.

In Your glorified Face we learn to overcome every form of egoism, to hope against hope, to choose works of life against the actions of death. Give us grace to place you at the centre of our life, to remain faithful amidst dangers and the changes of the world, to our Christian vocation; to announce to all people the power of the Cross and the Word which saves; to be watchful and active, to attend the needs of the little ones; to understand the need of true liberation, which had its beginning in You and will have its end in You.

Lord, grant to Your Church to stand like Your Virgin Mother, at the glorious Cross, and at the crosses of all people to bring about consolation, hope and comfort.

May the Holy Spirit which You have granted, bring to maturation Your work of salvation, through Your Holy Face, which shines forever and ever. Amen.

Consecration to the Holy Face of Jesus Christ’s Passion

– Consecration of Myself to Your Most Holy Face, O’ Jesus –

O’ Adorable Face of my Lord Jesus, I humbly prostrate/stand myself in Thy divine presence, I desire to consecrate myself wholly & solely to Thee and henceforth to live only for Thee, I surrender all! < press + Why have I not at my disposal, the hearts of all creatures, in order to offer them up as an holocaust to Thee? Alas! O' well beloved Holy Face of my God, I have only myself; unworthy as it is of Thy attention and often rebelling against the movements of Thy grace; nevertheless, I give it all unto Thee, my poor heart; and I consecrate it unto Thee, in order that, from this moment and during all the days of my life, it may be inflamed with the holy ardor of Thy divine love. Purify it, warm it with the blessed rays of Thy eternal light of peace & love, so that I may henceforth exclaim with the prophet king: «Lord, the light of Thy Face is engraved upon me; Thou hast caused joy to spring forth in my heart. ( Ps. iv, 7. ) I offer Thee then this very day in time, deliberately and with great joy, the sacrifice of all the delights which may be offered me on earth. Accept, O' Adorable Face of my Lord Jesus, O' Thou whom I love more than aught else in the world; accept the homage of myself, which I present to Thee at this moment. I thrill with gladness and with love, whilst thus consecrating to Thee the whole of my being. Yes, I offer and I consecrate to Thee my heart, my body, my soul, my spirit, and my life; my heart, to love only Thee, O' beauty ever ancient and ever new; my body, to serve as an instrument of reparation and of all that belongs to Thy glory; my soul, to reflect unceasingly the image of Thy different graces; my spirit, to think only upon Thee, and upon all that will tend to spread devotion to Thee; my life, my whole life, all it's joy, all it's sorrow, all it's miserable sins, all it's regrets of injustice, all it's wrong decision doings and all it's pain; in order that it may be penetrated with Thy sweet memory, and filled with actions worthy Thy Precious Name, so that I may one day merit that life eternal, in which, according to the expression of Thy apostle, I may contemplate Thee, no longer as in an enigma and through a mirror, but face to face, and as Thou truly art. Whilst waiting until that ' Great Day of the LORD ' shall come. O' Holy Face of Jesus, make me walk here below; in this valley of tears, in the light of Thy benign eyes, that when I shall appear before Thee, Thou may-est name me by my name, Thou may-est kiss me with the kiss of Thy mouth, and Thou may-est introduce me into the immortal society of the blessed who are occupied without ceasing in contemplating Thee, praising Thee, adoring Thee, and eternally singing Thy mercies. Amen. + ACT OF LOVE TO THE HOLY FACE Adorable Face of my Jesus, my only love, my light and my life, grant that I may see no one except Thee, that I may know no one except Thee, that I may love Thee alone, that I may live with Thee, of Thee, by Thee, and for Thee, and only Thee. Amen. ACT OF REPARATION O' well beloved Face of my Lord Jesus! humbly I prostrate/stand in Thy presence, I adore Thee for those who refuse to adore Thee; I love Thee and I pray to Thee, for those who refuse to love Thee and who blaspheme Thee. Unhappy madmen! if they knew Thee better, with what repentance and confusion would they turn towards Thee, how they would seek to make compensation to Thee for all which Thou hast suffered for us! The audacity of impiety has increased, a clamor issuing from hell has been raised for the purpose of denying Thy divinity and outraging the Church, a diabolical pact has been formed against God and against his Christ. It is for me, a faithful Christian, to close my ranks under the banner of the Holy Face, to multiply my phalanx of reparation, to offer to Thee, O' Jesus, as did Veronica, the veil of my love and of my veneration. I need no longer, O' Merciful Face, envy the happiness of that heroic woman; I may, like her, wipe Thy tears away, gather Thy blood, and solace Thy sufferings. O' Sacred Face! permit me to weep over the crimes of my erring brethren. Enable me to repair, by my sighs and my love, the attempts made against Thy divinity. Ah! I attest that divinity which has its habitation in Thee, with my whole heart; and if, in order to maintain it, the sacrifice of our life were necessary, I would joyously make an offering of it to Thee. O' well beloved Face of my Lord Jesus Christ! let Thy eyes of mercy and compassion rest upon me. Pardon this deicidal century, which refuses to bend its proud head to Thy sovereign authority. Dissipate, by the light of Thy presence, the darkness which envelopes me, and which, if it were not for Thee, would drag me down into the still deeper darkness of death. Convert the blasphemers, bring back to the light of faith the ignorant and the unbelievers, console the just, strengthen the weak, and grant that all, with one accent of faith and love, may exclaim with the Prophet; « Now, O' Lord, I follow Thee with my whole heart, I fear Thee and I seek after Thy adorable Face. » ( Dan. m , 41.) PRAYER OF SAINT AUGUSTINE I present myself before Thy Holy Face, O' my Saviour, laden with my sins and the penalties which they have brought upon me. My sufferings are far less than what I deserve, for, although I am conscious of the just punishment of my sins, I do not, on that account, cease to commit fresh ones every day. I am bowed down under Thy scourges, and I do not become better; my heart is full of bitterness, and my obstinacy, in doing evil, remains for ever the same. My life passes away in misery, and I do not correct myself. When Thou chastise-st me, I make the best promises in the world; as soon as Thou lift-st up Thy hand, I forget all that I promised Thee. I make to Thee, O' God! a sincere confession of my sins; I protest in Thy presence, that if Thou do not show mercy upon me, I shall be in danger of perishing utterly. Grant me , my Saviour, 'King of the Universe' ,what I beg of Thee, although I do not deserve it, since Thou hast of Thy goodness drawn me out of nothingness to put me into a state wherein I can pray to Thee. Amen. ACT OF REPARATION FOR ALL THE OUTRAGES WHICH JESUS CHRIST HAS SUFFERED IN HIS HOLY FACE I adore Thee, and I praise Thee, O' my divine Jesus, Son of the living God, for all the outrages Thou hast endured for me , who am the most miserable of Thy creatures, in all the sacred members of Thy body, but especially in the most noble part of Thyself, that is to say, in Thy Face. I salute Thee, amiable Face, wounded with blows and scourges, soiled with spittle and disfigured by the evil treatment which the impious Jews, the Romans and us sinners caused Thee to suffer. I salute you, O' lovely eyes! all bathed in the tears you have shed for my salvation. I salute you, sacred ears, tormented by an infinity of blasphemies, injuries and shameful mocking. I salute you, O' holy mouth! filled with grace and sweetness towards us sinners, and made to drink of vinegar and gall by the monstrous ingratitude of those whom Thou hadst chosen to be Thy people. In reparation for all these ignominies , I offer Thee all the homage which has been rendered Thee in the holy place where Thou hast willed to be honoured by the special devotion to which I unite myself with my whole heart. Amen. ACT OF ADMIRATION WHEN CONTEMPLATING THE HOLY FACE O' Lord! wherefore hast Thou given me an imprint of Thy Holy Face, in the sad and pitiful state of Thy Passion? Why didst not Thou rather portray it with those sweet traits which enrapture all hearts, or with the dazzling splendor with which it was clothed on the day of Thy glorious Transfiguration? It seems to me as though Thy admirable beauty would have caused me to feel more delight in Thee and more love for Thee, and that the majesty of Thy Face would have inspired me with more reverence! Would not Thy august brow have worn a more gracious aspect, if it had been adorned with a crown of light, or with a diadem, than with only a circlet bristling with thorns? But no, divine Saviour! Thy Face in its dazzling glory is reserved to be for ever the object of the joy of the blessed in Paradise, but Thy Face, disfigured by the ignominy of Thy Passion, ought to be the ordinary subject of my veneration here below, and the model for my imitation. I shall every day experience that nothing is more efficacious for enkindling Thy love in my heart, for animating me to the practice of all kinds of virtues and for making me avoid all sin. Grant me then the grace, O' Amiable Saviour, so to compassionate Thy sufferings upon earth, that I may hereafter merit to participate in Thy triumph in heaven. In Your name; Jesus, I pray. Amen. PRAYER TO ENTREAT FOR THE TRIUMPH OF THE CHURCH BY MEANS OF THE HOLY FACE TAKEN FROM THE SCRIPTURES (Dan., ix, 13, 14, 17, 18, 19.) O' Lord Jesus, I entreated not Thy Face that I might turn from all my iniquities, and think on Thy truth. And the Lord hath watched upon the evil, and hath brought it upon me: the Lord my God is just in all his works which he hath done: for I have not hearkened to His voice. Now, therefore, O' my God, hear the supplication of Thy servant, and my earnest prayers: and shew Thy Face upon Thy sanctuary which is desolate, for Thy own sake. Incline, O' my God, Thy ear, and hear; open Thy eyes, and see my desolation, and the city upon which Thy Name is called: for it is not for my justifications that I present my prayers before Thy Face, but for the multitude of Thy tender mercies. O' Lord, hear: O' Lord, be appeased: hearken and do: delay not for Thy own sake, O' my God: because Thy Name is invocated upon Thy city, and upon Thy people. But there is no one who invokes this powerful name; there is none who lifts himself up to Thee, and who endeavors by his supplications to restrain the effects of Thy anger. Therefore, Thou hast turned away Thy Face from us, and Thou hast bruised us under the weight of our iniquities. Lord, look upon us in pity, keep no longer silence, and do not leave us a prey to such sharp sorrows. O', if Thou wouldst open the heavens and come down! The mountains would tremble before Thy Face. Thy name would be known among-st Thy enemies, the nations would be struck with terror. Cast Thy eyes upon me, and remember that I am Thy people. Amen. PRAYERS TO THE HOLY FACE O' Jesus! Thou must be God! Since Thou art patient enough still to remain in my midst! If Thou couId-est but find a sufficiency of friends possessed of the courage to interpose between Thee and the miserable people who conduct Thee back to Calvary!... But, as on the day of Thy Passion, Thou art alone among-st Thy enemies. Alas! do I not run the risk of losing all, if, illuminated by the light of faith which enables me to see what Thou art, O' Jesus! I do not at least imitate the witness of Thy death in our lively contrition? If it be not given to all of me to weep like Saint Peter, grant that were may strike my breasts like the populace which returned to Jerusalem distracted with grief at recognizing the proof of a deicide. O' Holy Spirit! Thou who didst enlighten the Apostles and didst reanimate their courage so energetically, inflame me, also, with Thy divine fire, put into my mouth burning words after having enkindled in my heart the fire of Thy love, that becoming new man, I may feel myself possessed of sufficient courage to throw myself into the midst of the ranks of the enemy. Grant me the grace to vanquish them and to oblige them to love Thee. Prayer of Reparation to the Holy Face O' my Lord Jesus! after having contemplated Thy features, disfigured by grief; after having meditated upon Thy Sacred Passion with compunction and love, how can my heart help being inflamed with a holy hatred of sin, which even now, still outrages Thy adorable Face? But, not allowing myself to be content with mere compassion, grant me the grace (if it be Your will) to follow Thee so closely on this new Calvary, that the opprobrium destined for Thee may rebound upon me. O' Jesus, and that I may at least have some small share in the expiation of sin. Amen. Offering of the Holy Face to the Eternal Father Almighty God and Eternal Father, contemplate the Face of Thy Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. I present it to Thee, Eternal Father with confidence for the glory of Thy Holy Name, for the exaltation of Thy holy Church, and for the salvation of the whole world. Most merciful Advocate, He opens His mouth to plead my cause and the cause of all men; listen to His cries, behold His tears, O' my God, and Thou wilt be touched with compassion towards us poor sinners who ask of Thee for grace and mercy, in His name. Amen. Prayer to the Holy Face for the feast of the Dedication O' God of Host! who on the day of the dedication of the temple, in an effusion of merciful goodness, didst promise to listen, from the height of heaven, to those who should invoke Thy Name, and who should seek Thy Holy Face; grant to the associates of the Work of Reparation of blasphemy, prostate/stand before Thy adorable Face, the graces of which they have need in order efficaciously to work out are own salvation and to convert the blasphemers themselves, for whom Thy Holy Name is invoked with confidence. Thou, who livest and reign-est for ever and ever. Amen. Aspiration towards the glorious Face of our Lord O' Lord! at the thought of the blessings which the vision of Thy Face could not but shed upon the earth, the Prophet exclaims in a holy transport: « Happy the people who joyfully declare Thy glory...» O' Lord! permit me to aspire to this divine science, grant me to walk in the light of Thy Holy Face, and to rejoice in the praises which I will offer by day and night to Thy holy Name. PRAYERS OF MR. LEO DUPONT O' Saviour Jesus! at the sight of Thy most Holy Face, disfigured by grief, and at the sight of Thy Sacred Heart so full of love, I cry out with Saint Augustine: Lord Jesus, impress upon my heart Thy sacred wounds, that I may read therein at once Thy sorrow and Thy love; Thy sorrow, in order to suffer every affliction for Thee; Thy love, in order for Thee to despise every other love. Amen. + Lord Jesus! when presenting myself before Thy adorable Face to entreat Thee for the graces of which I have need of, I beseech Thee, above all things, so to order the interior dispositions of my heart, that I may never refuse Thee aught that Thou Thyself ask-est of me every day, through Thy holy commandments and by Thy divine inspirations. Amen. O' good Jesus, who hast said: « Ask, and you shall receive; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you, » give me, if it be Thy will, the faith which supplies all, or else supply Thyself all that is wanting in me of faith; please grant me, by the sole effect of Thy charily and for Thy eternal glory, the graces of which I stand in need and which we look for from Thine infinite mercy. Amen. Be merciful unto me, O' my God! do not reject my prayers, when, in the midst of my afflictions, I call upon Thy holy Name and seek with love and confidence Thy adorable Face. Amen. We thank Thee, O' Lord Jesus, for all Thy benefits, and I entreat Thee to engrave in my heart feelings of love and of gratitude, putting upon my lips songs of thanksgiving to Thy eternal praise. Amen. Prayer by: MR. DUPONT USED WHEN ANOINTING THE SICK WITH OIL May the Lord himself deign, together with us, to anoint this sick person and to restore him to health. In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Or, May the holy Names of Jesus, of Mary and of Joseph be known, blessed and glorified throughout the whole earth. Amen. RESOLUTION TO CONFESS OUR SINS BEFORE ASKING FOR A CURE Thy word, O' Lord Jesus, granted to the happy paralytic, in the Gospel, the remission of his sins, before Thou said-st to him: Arise. Therefore, I, a miserable sinner, knowing and firmly believing, that Thou hast given to Thy priests power to remit sins, resolve to descend at once into the sacred bath of penitence, before calling upon the eyes of Thy mercy, to look upon my corporal infirmities. Then, submitting myself, heart and soul, to Thy most holy will, I will await, in peace, O' Lord, the accomplishment of my wishes here on earth, with the hope of contemplating, blessing and praising Thy adorable Face for ever and ever in heaven. In Your name I pray. Amen. PRAYER TO ENTREAT FOR THE TRIUMPH OF THE CHURCH BY MEANS OF THE HOLY FACE TAKEN FROM THE SCRIPTURES (Dan., ix, 13, 14, 17, 18, 19.) The devil rushes forth from the abyss, hurrying to make horrible conquests; he excites the infernal band; he exclaims: Souls! souls I let us hasten to ruin souls! — And souls fall like autumn leaves into the eternal abyss. We also, O' my God, we will cry: Souls! souls! We must have souls, wherewith to acquit the debt of gratitude we have contracted towards Thee; we ask them of Thee by the wounds of Jesus, our Saviour. These adorable wounds cry out to Thee even as so many powerful mouths. The King crowned with thorns demands subjects torn from the devil; we ask them from Thee, together with him and by him, for Thy greater glory, and by the intercession of the most holy Virgin Mary, conceived without sin. Amen. PRAYER OF PIUS IX « O' my Jesus ! cast upon us a look of mercy; turn Thy Face towards each one of us, even as Thou didst turn to Veronica, not that we may see it with the eyes of our body, for we do not deserve to do so, but turn it towards our hearts, that, being sustained by Thee, we may ever draw from that powerful source, the vigor necessary to enable us to wage the combats we have to undergo. ASPIRATIONS Eternal Father, we offer Thee the adorable Face of Thy well beloved Son for the honor and glory of Thy holy Name and for the salvation of all men. May I expire, burning with an ardent thirst to see the desirable Face of my Lord Jesus Christ! PRAISES OF THE HOLY FACE Blessed be Jesus! Blessed be the Holy Face of Jesus! Blessed be the Holy Face in the majesty and beauty of its heavenly featured! Blessed be the Holy Face through the words which issued from its divine mouth! Blessed be the Holy Face through all the glances which escaped from its adorable eyes! Blessed be the Holy Face in the Transfiguration of Tabor! Blessed be the Holy Face in the fatigues of its aposlolate! Blessed be the Holy Face in the bloody sweat of the agony! Blessed be the Holy Face in the humiliations of the Passion! Blessed be the Holy Face in the sufferings of death! Blessed be the Holy Face in the splendour of the Resurrection! Blessed be the Holy Face in the glory of light eternal! BENEDICTION OF THE HOLY FACE The Lord bless thee, and keep thee; The Lord show his Face to thee, and have mercy on thee; The Lord turn his countenance towards thee, and give thee peace. (Num., vi, 24 to 27.) PRAISES TO THE NAME OF GOD, TO JESUS-CHRIST AND TO MARY, IN REPARATION FOR BLASPHEMIES Blessed be God. Blessed be his Holy Name. Blessed be Jesus Christ, true God an d true man. Blessed be the name of Jesus. Blessed be Jesus in the most Holy Sacrament of the Altar. Blessed be the great mother of God, Mary most holy. Blessed be her holy and immaculate Conception. Blessed be the name of Mary, Virgin and Mother. Blessed be God in his angels and in his saints. LET GOD ARISE AND LET HIS ENEMIES BE SCATTERED! Three Paler, three Ave, three Gloria Patri. Saint Michael and all the holy Angels, pray and fight for us! Saint Peter and all the holy Apostles, intercede for us! St. Ignatius, St. Teresa and all the inhabitants of the heavenly Jerusalem, pray for us! ASPIRATIONS DURING THE DAY May Thy Name, O' Lord, be known and blessed at all times, and in all places! Holy Mary, reign over us, thou and thy Son Jesus. Amen. THE GOLDEN ARROW ACT OF PRAISE FOR THE REPARATION OF BLASPHEMIES AGAINST THE HOLY NAME OF GOD May the most holy, most sacred, most adorable, most incomprehensible and ineffable Name of God, be for ever praised, blessed, loved, adored and glorified, in heaven, on earth and in hell, by all the creatures of God, and by the Sacred Heart of our Lord Jesus Christ in the most Holy Sacrament of the Altar. Amen.

Holy Face of Jesus

The Holy Face of Jesus is a title for specific images which some Catholics believe to be miraculously formed representations of the face of Jesus Christ. The image obtained from the Shroud of Turin is associated with a specific medal worn by some Roman Catholics and is also one of the Catholic devotions to Christ.[1][2]

Various acheiropoieta (literally “not-handmade”) items relating to Christ have been reported throughout the centuries, and devotions to the face of Jesus have been practiced. Devotions to the Holy Face were approved by Pope Leo XIII in 1895 and Pope Pius XII in 1958.[3]

In the Roman Catholic tradition, the Holy Face of Jesus is used in conjunction with Acts of Reparation to Jesus Christ[4] with specific institutions whose focus is such reparations, e.g. the Pontifical Congregation of the Benedictine Sisters of the Reparation of the Holy Face. In his address to this Congregation, Pope John Paul II referred to such Acts of Reparation as the “unceasing effort to stand beside the endless crosses on which the Son of God continues to be crucified”.[5]

The Veronica [ edit ]

Belief in the existence of authentic images of Christ is connected with the old legend of Abgar of Edessa regarding the “Mandylion”, and the apocryphal writing known as the Mors Pilati [Wikidata], Acts of Pilate, regarding the “veil of Veronica”.[6] The oldest and best known of these images was called the vera icon (true image), which in ordinary language became known as “veronica”.

According to tradition Veronica encountered Jesus along the Via Dolorosa on the way to Calvary. When she paused to wipe the blood and sweat off his face with her veil, his image was imprinted on the cloth. The story is not recorded in its present form until the Middle Ages.[citation needed] The event is commemorated by the Sixth Station of the Cross.

Marie of St Peter Eluere [ edit ]

In 1844 Sister Marie of St Peter, a Carmelite nun in Tours, France, reported an interior locution in which Jesus told her, “Those who will contemplate the wounds on My Face here on earth, shall contemplate it radiant in heaven.”[7] She later reported further “communications”, as she termed them, with Jesus and the Virgin Mary in which she was urged to spread the devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus, in reparation for the many insults Jesus suffered in his Passion.[8] Devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus started to spread among Roman Catholics in France.[9]

Leo Dupont [ edit ]

Leo Dupont was a religious man from a noble family who had moved to Tours. In 1849 he had started the nightly Eucharistic Adoration movement in Tours, from where it spread within France. He later came to be known as the “Holy Man of Tours”. Upon hearing of Sister Marie of St Peter’s reported visions, he started to burn a vigil lamp continuously before a picture of the Holy Face of Jesus, at that time an image based on the Veil of Veronica.[10]

Dupont prayed for and promoted the case for a devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus for around 30 years. But the documents pertaining to the life of sister Marie of St. Peter and the devotion were kept by the Church and not released. Yet Dupont persisted. Eventually, in 1874 Charles-Théodore Colet was appointed as the new Archbishop of Tours. Archbishop Colet examined the documents and in 1876 gave permission for them to be published and the devotion encouraged, shortly before Dupont died. Dupont was thereafter at times referred to as the Apostle of the Holy Face.[11]

When Leo Dupont died in 1876, his house on Rue St. Etienne in Tours was purchased by the Archdiocese of Tours and turned into the Oratory of the Holy Face. The oratory is administered by an order of priests called the Priests of the Holy Face, canonically erected in 1876. The Devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus was approved by Pope Leo XIII in 1885, who expressed a desire to establish a similar oratory in Rome.[12][13] This was eventually opened in the Via Pietro Cavallini in 1891 and administered by the Priests, but was demolished in subsequent redevelopment.[14]

Thérèse of Lisieux [ edit ]

Thérèse of Lisieux was a French nun who received the Carmelite habit in 1889 and later became known by the religious name “St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus and of the Holy Face”. She was introduced to the Holy Face devotion through her blood sister Pauline, Sister Agnès of Jesus. Thérèse wrote many prayers to express the devotion to the Holy Face.[15] She wrote the words “Make me resemble you, Jesus!” on a small card and attached a stamp of the Holy Face to it. She pinned the prayer in a small container over her heart since at that time the Holy Face Medal did not exist. In August 1895, in her “Canticle to the Holy Face” she wrote: “Jesus, Your ineffable image is the star which guides my steps. Ah, You know, Your sweet Face is for me Heaven on earth. My love discovers the charms of Your Face adorned with tears. I smile through my own tears when I contemplate Your sorrows.”

Thérèse also composed the Holy Face prayer for sinners: “Eternal Father, since Thou hast given me for my inheritance the adorable Face of Thy Divine Son, I offer that face to Thee and I beg Thee, in exchange for this coin of infinite value, to forget the ingratitude of souls dedicated to Thee and to pardon all poor sinners.[16]

Shroud of Turin [ edit ]

A broader devotion to the Holy Face is based on the image used on the Shroud of Turin which some believe to be the burial cloth of Jesus. It is different from the likeness of Jesus on the Veil of Veronica, although the veil image had earlier been used in devotions. Since the Holy Face image is said to have been obtained from the burial cloth of Jesus, it is assumed to be a post-crucifixion image. However, the likeness on the Veil of Veronica is by definition pre-crucifixion, for it is assumed to have been imprinted when Veronica encountered Jesus in Jerusalem along the Via Dolorosa on the way to Calvary.[6]

Although the Shroud of Turin has been publicly displayed by Roman Catholics at least since the 16th century, the faint image of the Holy Face on it cannot be clearly seen with the naked eye and was only observed with the advent of photography. In 1898, amateur Italian photographer Secondo Pia was startled by the negative of the image in his darkroom as he was developing the first photograph of the shroud. The happenstance by which Secondo Pia received the King’s approval to attempt the first photograph of the Shroud for an exhibition was unusual in its own right. And Pia later said that on the evening of May 28, 1898, he almost dropped and broke the photographic plate in the darkroom from the shock of seeing the image of a face on the Shroud (for the first time ever) that could not have been clearly observed with the naked eye.[17]

Hence devotions to the Holy Face prior to that year relied on earlier images, based on paintings of the Veil of Veronica.

Maria Pierina De Micheli [ edit ]

On the first Friday in Lent 1936, Sister Maria Pierina De Micheli, who was born near Milan Italy, reported a vision in which Jesus told her: “I will that My Face, which reflects the intimate pains of My Spirit, the suffering and the love of My Heart, be more honored. He who meditates upon Me, consoles Me”.[1][2]

Further reported visions of Jesus and Mary urged Sister Maria Pierina to make a medal with the Holy Face of Jesus. This became known as the Holy Face Medal. On one side the medal bears a replica of the Holy Face image from Shroud of Turin and an inscription based on Psalm 66:2: “Illumina, Domine, vultum tuum super nos”, i.e. “May, O Lord, the light of Thy countenance shine upon us”.[1][5] On the other side of the medal there is an image of a radiant Sacred Host, the monogram of the Holy Name (“IHS”), and the inscription “Mane nobiscum, Domine” i.e. “Stay with us, O Lord”.[1]

In another vision, Sister Maria Pierina reported that Jesus told her: “Every time my Face is contemplated I will pour out my love into the heart of those persons, and by means of my Holy Face the salvation of many souls will be obtained”. She further reported that Jesus wanted a special Feast on the day before Ash Wednesday in honor of His Holy Face, to be preceded by a Novena (9 days) of prayers.[citation needed]

After some effort Sister Maria Pierina managed to obtain permission to cast the medal and its use started to grow in Italy. As World War II started, many soldiers and sailors were given a Holy Face Medal as a means of protection. Sister Maria Pierina herself died in 1945 at the end of the war.[1][2][18]

In 2000 Pope John Paul II stated that the inscription “Illumina, Domine, Vultum tuum super nos” on the Holy Face Medal underscores the need for deeper reflection on the Face of Jesus and the spread of devotion to it.[5]

Vatican approval and Feast Day [ edit ]

The first medal of the Holy Face was offered to Pope Pius XII who approved of the devotion and the medal. In 1958 he formally declared the Feast of the Holy Face of Jesus as Shrove Tuesday (the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday) for all Roman Catholics.

On the occasion of the 100th year of Secondo Pia’s (May 28, 1898) first photograph of the Shroud of Turin, on Sunday May 24, 1998, Pope John Paul II visited the Turin Cathedral. In his address on that day, he said:”the Shroud is an image of God’s love as well as of human sin” and “it is an icon of the suffering of the innocent in every age.”[19]

The Holy Face devotion and the Holy Face Medal spread among Roman Catholics worldwide, with organizations such as the Holy Face Association.

Theological analysis [ edit ]

In his 2005 book On the Way to Jesus Christ, Pope Benedict XVI performed an analysis of Holy Face devotions, and characterized them as having three separate components.[20] The first element is discipleship, and the orientation of one’s life towards an encounter with Jesus. The second element is seeing Jesus in the Eucharist. The third element is eschatological, and is interwoven between the other two.[20]

Referring to Matthew 25:31-36 Benedict XVI stated that the first element (i.e. discipleship) involves seeing Jesus in the face of the poor and the oppressed, and caring for them, but to properly see Jesus in the face of those in need, believers first need to become better acquainted with Jesus through the Eucharist.[20] The second element involves relating the Passion of Jesus, and the suffering expressed by the images that represent his wounded face to the Eucharistic experience. Thus the devotion that starts with the images of the face of Jesus leads to his contemplation in the Eucharistic experience.[20] The eschatological element then builds on awakening to Christ by contemplating his face in the Eucharist.[20]

Institute for Holy Face research [ edit ]

The International Institute for Research on the Face of Christ was formed in 1997 by Cardinal Fiorenzo Angelini and the Benedictine Sisters of the Reparation of the Holy Face in Rome.[21]

In his message to the 6th annual conference of the Institute held in Rome in October 2002, Pope John Paul II emphasized the spiritual importance of contemplation of the Face of Christ and referred to his Apostolic Letter Novo Millennio Ineunte which stated:[22][23]

And is it not the Church’s task to reflect the light of Christ in every historical period, to make his face shine also before the generations of the new millennium? Our witness, however, would be hopelessly inadequate if we ourselves had not first contemplated his face.

In the same message John Paul II also related the theme of the contemplation to that of contemplating the Person of Christ as discussed in his first encyclical Redemptor hominis.[22]

Mary, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I accept your mission for me. I will give my life to you and your Son, Jesus. Every day I will choose to offer sacrifices and pray to you. I know that I am little, but I believe that I have been given a great mission by you to bring many people to God. May your Immaculate Heart Triumph!

Morning Glory Consecration Prayer

I, ___________________________ , a repentant sinner, renew and ratify today in your hands,O, Immaculate Mother, the vows of my Baptism. I renounce Satan and resolve to follow Jesus Christ even more closely than before.

Mary, I give you my heart. Please set it on fire with love for Jesus. Make it always attentive to his burning thirst for love and for souls. Keep my heart in your most pure Heart that I may love Jesus and the members of his Body with your own perfect love.

Mary, I entrust myself totally to you: my body and soul, my goods, both interior and exterior, and even the value of all my good actions. Please make of me, of all that I am and have, whatever most pleases you. Let me be a fit instrument in your immaculate and merciful hands for bringing the greatest possible glory to God. Meaning of Consecration to Mary

– Answered by Father Johann Roten, S.M.

Q: What is the meaning of consecration?

A: Consecration (nowadays also called dedication or entrustment) is a well-known term in the history of spirituality. It has biblical roots, and became the quest of many saints and spirituals through the centuries. Martyrs, virgins, monks are so-called consecrated persons. Consecration can be both personal and communitarian. It was promoted as oblation in Spain (fifteenth and sixteenth centuries) and became the object of special attention in France in the seventeenth century. Famous names attached to the Consecration movement are St. Louis Grignion de Montfort, St. John Eudes, and St. Margaret Mary Alacoque. During the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries Popes Leo XIII and Pius XI lent their voices to the movement. So did the Legion of Mary, St. Maximilian Kolbe, and his Militia of the Immaculate, and the various Fatima groupings. During this century entire nations were consecrated to Mary (Portugal, Italy, Poland…) and, based on the message of Fatima, the consecration of the whole world was requested. This consecration was made by John Paul II on March 24, 1984, in union with the bishops of the world, and considered by Lucia as both sufficient and efficacious. On October 8, after the celebration of the mass, bishops united with the Holy Father in an “Act of Entrustment” to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

But what is the meaning of consecration (dedication or entrustment)?

1. God consecrates

In a strict and primary sense, there is room only for one type of consecration, the one made by God himself. Only God can appropriate a human being and make him/her sacred. God communicates his holiness to us; he gives us participation in his holiness. He is our creator and wants us to be in his image. This transformation into his likeness is the foremost meaning of consecration.

2. Consecration is a response

Our consecration is therefore essentially a response to his call. In acquiescing, we bind ourselves to a consecration that comes from God. We consecrate ourselves to belong to the Lord in a new way. In fact this new way is the only way by which we truly become who we are. The foremost example of God-human consecration is Jesus Christ himself. He is the “Anointed,” meaning he totally belongs to God. When, by a free act of his person (intelligence, will, affection), he accepts the mission for the salvation of the world (Jn 17, 19; 30) he consecrates himself. This is what we call his subjective consecration in response to the objective consecration of his being which occurred in his humanity at the moment of the Incarnation.

3. Consecration in Christ through baptism

Christ imparts to his disciples and followers a very special belonging to God. He gives us his own life by making us participants in his own consecration. This happens in baptism. Baptism is our first and most important consecration. Baptism is our objective consecration. With Christ and through him we are destined and commissioned to the glory of God and the salvation of the world. There is a radical meaning to this mission: through baptism we do not belong to ourselves anymore but to Christ who imparts his life to us.

4. A consequence of baptism

What we commonly regard as consecration–our subjective consecration through promises, renewal of baptismal promises, confirmation, and vows–is consecration by voluntary adherence to what baptism has made of us. We promise to live as sons and daughters of God, and thus fulfill subjectively our objective consecration. All consecrations which follow baptism are rooted in this primary act of our Christian vocation.

5. Consecration to Mary

Can we consecrate ourselves to Mary? Mary is not the Creator, she is not the Redeemer. She is the opposite of a Goddess; she never substituted herself for God. But it was God’s will that Mary had something to do with our Christian life, with our sanctification. It is a role assigned to her by God. In perfect union with her Son and subordinate to him, the Vatican II Council calls her “our mother in the order of grace” (LG 61). Let us not forget that Mary is the prototype of perfect consecration at the beginning of the New Testament. She was chosen to help us in our consecration through her intercession and by her maternal care, which disposes us to receive the gift of God we receive in baptism. She is the perfect example of the Church, and the model of all faithful. In her extreme spiritual sensitivity to the Holy Spirit’s inspiration she is God’s creaturely masterpiece.

All consecrations to Mary have this Spirit-oriented (meaning Christocentric and theocentric) meaning. Consecration to Mary is consecration to the “perfect means” (Montfort) which Jesus chose to unite himself with us and vice versa. Consecration to Mary heightens the depth and truth of our commitment to Christ. Consecration to Mary must explicitly state that our ultimate goal and end is God (Holy Spirit; Christ our Lord). Consecrations to Mary where one pledges to perform all actions “through Mary, in Mary, and for Mary” are in fact a pledge to perform them more perfectly through Jesus Christ, with him, in, and for him. Dedication to the Heart of Mary must therefore maintain the vital unity between the Heart of Mary and the Heart of Jesus. We must confide ourselves to the Heart of Mary in view of our consecration to God. We offer ourselves to this divine consecration through Mary, for she points the way to the heart of Jesus.

[r] Lord, hide us in the secret of your Face!…

Sr. C. Geneviève of St. Th.-Marie of the Holy Face

Sr. L. J. Marie of the Trinity and 5 of the Holy Face

Sr. Marie F. Th. of the Child Jesus and of the Holy Face

For a little of this pure Love is more beneficial to the church than all these other works put together…. Thus it is 10 of the greatest importance that our souls be exercised much in Love so that being consumed quickly we do not linger long here on earth but soon attain to the vision of Jesus, Face to Face.

[v] Consecration to the Holy Face

O Adorable Face of Jesus! Since you have deigned to choose our souls to be intimately yours in order to give yourself to them, we come to consecrate them to you…. O Jesus, we seem to hear you say to us: “Open to me my sisters, my beloved brides, for my Face is covered with dew and my hair with the drops of the night.” Our souls understand your language of love; we want to dry your gentle Face and to console you for the forgetfulness of the wicked. In their eyes you are still as one hidden; they look upon you as an object of contempt.

10 O Face more beautiful than the lilies and roses of springtime! You are not hidden from our eyes…. The Tears that veil your divine look seem to us like precious Diamonds which we want to collect to buy the souls of our brothers and sisters with their infinite value.

From your Adorable Mouth we have heard your loving complaint. 15 Since we know that the thirst which consumes you is a thirst for Love, we would wish to have an infinite Love to quench your thirst…. Beloved Bridegroom, of our souls, if we had the love of all hearts, all that love would be for you…. Well, give us this lave and come and quench your thirst in your

little brides

20 Souls, Lord, we need souls above all the souls of apostles and martyrs so that through them we might inflame all poor sinners with your Love. O Adorable Face, we shall gain this grace from you!.. Then, heedless of our exile on the banks of Babylon, we will sing for your Ears the sweetest melodies. Since you are the true, the only Homeland of our hearts, we will not sing our songs in an alien land.

O beloved Face of Jesus! As we await the everlasting day when we will contemplate your infinite Glory, our one desire is to charm your Divine Eyes by hiding our 30 faces too so that here on earth no one can recognize us… O Jesus! Your Veiled Gaze is our Heaven!…

ACT OF CONSECRATION TO THE HOLY FACE OF JESUS

(For yourself and your family)

O Lord Jesus, we believe most firmly in You, we love You. You are the Eternal Son of God and the Son Incarnate of the Blessed Virgin Mary. You are the Lord and Absolute Ruler of all creation. We acknowledge You, therefore, as the Universal Sovereign of all creatures.

You are the Lord and Supreme Ruler of all mankind, and we, in acknowledging this Your dominion, consecrate ourselves to You now and forever.

Loving Jesus, we place our family under the protection of Your Holy Face, and of Your Virgin Mother, Mary most sorrowful.

Embrace us at the hour of death in Your Kingdom for all eternity, through the intercession of Your Blessed Mother, of all Your Saints who behold You in Heaven, and the just who glorify You on earth.

Amen.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Prayer

O Lord Jesus, Who has said, learn of me for I am meek and humble of heart, and Who did manifest upon Thy Holy Face the sentiments of Thy divine heart, grant that we may love to come frequently and meditate upon Thy divine features. We may read there Thy gentleness and Thy humility, and learn how to form our hearts in the practice of these two virtues which Thou desirest to see shine in Thy servants. Mary our Mother and Saint Joseph help us.

Prayer in Honor of the Dolors of the Blessed Virgin

O Most Holy and afflicted Virgin, Queen of Martyrs! Who stood beneath the cross, witnessing the agony of thy dying Son, look down with a mother’s tenderness and pity on us as we kneel before thee to venerate thy Dolors, and place our requests, with filial confidence, in the sanctuary of thy wounded heart. Present them on our behalf to Jesus, through the merits of His most sacred Passion and Death, together with thy sufferings at the foot of the cross, and, through the united efficacy of both, obtain the favor which we humbly ask. To whom shall we go in our wants and miseries if not to thee? O Mother of Mercy, who having so deeply drunk of the chalice of thy Son, graciously alleviate the sufferings of those who still sigh in this land of exile. Amen

Prayer to the Souls in Purgatory

My Jesus, by the sorrows Thou didst suffer in Thine agony in the garden, in Thine scourging and crowning with thorns, in the way to Calvary, in Thine crucifixion and death, have mercy on the souls in Purgatory, and especially on those that are most forsaken. Deliver them from the dire torments they endure. Call them and admit them to Thy most sweet embrace in Paradise. Amen

After contemplating Thy features, disfigured by grief, after meditating upon Thy passion with compunction and love, how can our hearts fail to be inflamed with a holy hatred of sin, which even now outrages Thy Adorable Face! Lord, suffer us not to be content with mere compassion, but give us grace to so closely follow Thee in this Calvary, so that the opprobrium destined for Thee may fall on us, O Jesus, that thus we may have a share, small though it may be, in expiation of sin. Amen

Hail Mary, Temple and Sacrarium of the Most Holy Trinity! Hail Mary, our mistress, our wealth, our mystic rose, Queen of our hearts, our Mother, our life, our sweetness, and our dearest hope! We are all thine, and all we have is thine. O Virgin blessed above all things, may thy soul be in us to magnify the Lord; may thy spirit be in us to rejoice in God. Place thyself, O faithful Virgin, as a seal upon our hearts, that in thee and through thee we may be found faithful to God. Grant, most gracious Virgin, that we may be numbered among those whom thou art pleased to love, to teach and to guide, to favor and to protect as thy children. Grant that with the help of thy love, we may despise all earthly consolation and cling to heavenly things, until through the Holy Spirit, thy faithful spouse, and through thee, His faithful spouse, Jesus Christ, thy Son, be formed within us for the glory of the Father. Mary, our Mother, intercede for us. Saint Joseph, pray for us.

Through the merits of Thy precious blood and Thy Holy Face, O Jesus, grant us our petition; Pardon and Mercy.

Prayer to Saint Peter

O glorious Saint Peter, who, in return for thy lively and generous faith, thy profound and sincere humility and thy burning love, was honored by Jesus Christ with singular privileges, and in particular, with the leadership of the other apostles and the primacy of the whole Church, of which thou wast made the foundation stone, do thou obtain for us the grace of a lively faith that shall not fear to profess itself openly in its entirety and in all of its manifestations, even to the shedding of blood, if occasion should demand it, and to the sacrifice of life itself in preference to surrender. Obtain for us likewise a sincere loyalty to our Holy Mother the Church. Grant that we may ever remain most closely and sincerely united to the Holy Father, who is the heir of thy faith and of thy authority, the one true visible head of the Catholic Church. Grant, moreover, that we may follow, in all humility and meekness, the Church’s teaching and counsels and may be obedient to all her precepts, in order to be able here on earth to enjoy a peace that is sure and undisturbed, and to attain one day in heaven to everlasting happiness. “For in sacrifice Thou take no delight, a burnt offering from me Thou wouldst refuse; my sacrifice a contrite spirit. A humbled, contrite heart Thou wilt not spurn. In Thy goodness, show favor to Zion; rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. Then Thou shalt be pleased with lawful sacrifice; holocausts offered on Thy altar.” —Psalm 51, 18-21

Prayer

Sacred Face of Our Lord and Our God, what words can we do to express our gratitude? How can we speak of our joy? That Thou hast deigned to hear us, that Thou hast chosen to answer us in our hour of need. We say this because we know that our prayers will be granted. We know that Thou, in Thy loving kindness, listened to our pleading hearts, and will give, out of Thy fullness, the answer to our problems. Mary, our Mother, we thank Thee for Thy intercession on our behalf. Saint Joseph, we thank Thee for Thine prayers.

Through the merits of Thy precious blood and Thy Holy Face, O Jesus, grant us our petition; Pardon and Mercy.

Prayer to the Holy Trinity

Most Holy Trinity, Godhead indivisible, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, our first beginning and our last end. Since Thou hast made us after Thy own image and likeness, grant that all the thoughts of our minds, all the words of our tongues, all the affections of our hearts, and all our actions may be always conformed to Thy most Holy Will, so that after having seen Thee here on earth in appearances and in a dark manner by the means of faith, we may come at last to contemplate Thee face to face, in the perfect possession of Thee forever in paradise. Amen

The Golden Arrow Prayer

The Golden Arrow Prayer

May the most holy, most sacred, most adorable, most incomprehensible and ineffable Name of God be forever praised, blessed, loved, adored, and glorified in Heaven, on earth, and under the earth, by all the creatures of God, and by the Sacred Heart of Our Lord Jesus Christ, in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar. Amen

“The Golden Arrow” is a prayer that Jesus gave to Sister Marie of St. Peter in August of 1843 in France. Sister Marie, a Carmelite nun, spoke of it as “an Act of Praise that Our Lord Himself dictated to me, notwithstanding my unworthiness, for the reparation of Blasphemy against His Holy Name.”

While opening His Heart to her, Jesus complained bitterly of blasphemy. He said that this most grievous sin was the sin that most offends the divine Majesty; more than all other sins, for it was like “a poisoned arrow.”

Then He dictated what He called “The Golden Arrow” prayer. He told Sister Mary that He would be most delightfully pierced by those who would recite this prayer, and that in addition, it would also heal those other wounds inflicted on Him by the malice of sinners.

Family Consecration To The Holy Face Of Jesus

O Lord Jesus, we believe most firmly in Thee, we love Thee. Thou art the Eternal Son of God and the Son Incarnate of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Thou art the Lord and Absolute Ruler of all creation. We acknowledge Thee, therefore, as the Universal Sovereign of all creatures. Thou art the Lord and Supreme Ruler of all mankind, and we, in acknowledging this, Thy dominion, consecrate ourselves to Thee now and forever.

Loving Jesus, we place our family under the protection of Thy Holy Face, and of Thy Virgin Mother, Mary most sorrowful. We promise to be faithful to Thee for the rest of our lives and to observe with fidelity Thy Holy Commandments. We will never deny before men, Thee and Thy Divine rights over us and all mankind. Grant us the grace to never sin again; nevertheless, should we fail, O Divine Savior, have mercy on us and restore us to Thy grace.

Radiate Thy Divine Countenance upon us and bless us now and forever. Embrace us at the hour of death in Thy Kingdom for all eternity, through the intercession of Thy Blessed Mother, of all thy Saints who behold Thee in Heaven, and the just who glorify Thee on earth, O Jesus, be mindful of us forever and never forsake us; protect our family.

O Mother of Sorrows, by the eternal glory which thou dost enjoy in Heaven, through the merits of thy bitter anguish in the Sacred Passion of thy Beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, obtain for us the grace that the Precious Blood shed by Jesus for the redemption of our souls, be not shed for us in vain.

We love thee, O Mary. Embrace us and bless us, O Mother. Protect us in life and in death. Amen

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen

An Act of Consecration to the Holy Face

Written for the Novices

O Adorable Face of Jesus, since Thou hast deigned to make special choice of our souls, in order to give Thyself to them, we come to consecrate these souls to Thee. We seem, O Jesus, to hear Thee say: “Open to Me, My Sisters, My Spouses, for My Face is wet with the dew, and My Locks with the drops of the night.” [278] Our souls understand Thy language of love; we desire to wipe Thy sweet Face, and to console Thee for the contempt of the wicked. In their eyes Thou art still “as it were hidden . . . they esteem Thee an object of reproach.” [279]

O Blessed Face, more lovely than the lilies and the roses of the spring, Thou art not hidden from us. The tears which dim Thine Eyes are as precious pearls which we delight to gather, and, through their infinite value, to purchase the souls of our brethren.

From Thy Adorable Lips we have heard Thy loving plaint: “I thirst.” Since we know that this thirst which consumes Thee is a thirst for love, to quench it we would wish to possess an infinite love.

Dear Spouse of our souls, if we could love with the love of all hearts, that love would be Thine. . . . Give us, O Lord, this love! Then come to thy Spouses and satisfy Thy Thirst.

And give to us souls, dear Lord . . . We thirst for souls! — Above all for the souls of Apostles and Martyrs . . . that through them we may inflame all poor sinners with love of Thee.

O Adorable Face, we shall succeed in winning this grace from Thee! Unmindful of our exile, “by the rivers of Babylon,” we will sing in Thine Ears the sweetest of melodies. Since Thou art the true and only Home of our souls, our songs shall not be sung in a strange land. [280] O Beloved Face of Jesus, while we await the Eternal Day when we shall gaze upon Thine Infinite Glory, our only desire is to delight Thy Divine Eyes by keeping our faces hidden too, so that no one on earth may recognize us . . . Dear Jesus, Heaven for us is Thy Hidden Face!
