The Light of La Salette: A Promise of Hope

“La Salette is a message of hope, for our hope is nourished by the intercession of her who is the Mother of mankind.”

– Pope John Paul II

September 19 of this year marks the 175th anniversary of the Apparition at La Salette. How did this devotion originate, and how is it honored at the Basilica? Read below to find out.

Origin of the Devotion to Our Lady of La Salette

One day, Mélanie Calvat (14) and Maximin Giraud (11) were herding cattle in the French Alps when they saw the Blessed Mother appear. She sat weeping, holding her face in her hands and surrounded by an orb of dazzling light. According to the children’s account, she related that she was concerned about the lack of devotion amongst Catholics and emphasized the importance of prayer and conversion. As she spoke, the children realized that the light was emanating from a special crucifix she was wearing around her neck.

Today, that crucifix is known as the La Salette cross, featuring a hammer and pincers at the ends of the horizontal beam behind Christ’s outstretched arms. While the hammer symbolizes sin and division, the pincers represent the missionaries’ work of reconciliation and combatting sin in the world. This cross is the symbol of the La Salette Missionaries today.

Our Lady of La Salette in the Basilica

The devotion to Our Lady of La Salette is honored with an oratory in the Basilica, featuring a vivid mosaic designed by J. Piercey Studios. The mosaic was blessed and dedicated by Theodore Cardinal McCarrick of Washington on May 12, 2002.

La Salette Apparition

Q: What happened at La Salette and what is the spirit of that event?

A: La Salette, a French town located in the Alps, was the place at which a Marian apparition occurred in the nineteenth century. On September 19, 1846, Maximin Giraud (eleven years old) and Melanie Calvat (fourteen years old) experienced an encounter with what they called a “Beautiful Lady.” The two children were grazing sheep at La Salette, when they saw that this woman was seated and was crying. Upon seeing them, the “Lady” stood up and while crying, spoke in French and in the local dialect. After that, the woman walked up a steep path and vanished into a bright light. According to the children, the light emanated from a crucifix on the woman’s chest. Soon after this event, word spread, and pilgrims crowded the rough paths leading up to the site where the apparition occurred.

There soon arose, a basilica and the first units for lodging. In 1851, the local bishop Bruillard of Grenoble affirmed the supernatural character of the apparition of La Salette. He based his decision upon a thorough inquiry of the event, complete with interviews of witnesses, and an examination of the apparition’s message to the seers. Bishop Bruillard wished to encourage the faith expression (prayer and devotion) practiced by pilgrims to La Salette.

The message of the visionaries of La Salette focuses on the conversion of all humanity to Christ. The “Beautiful Lady” of La Salette implores all people who would listen to “be reconciled to God.” This conversion requires daily prayer and frequent reception of the Sacraments of Penance and the Eucharist. The woman (the Virgin Mary) was in tears because she recognized the tremendous responsibility that free will places upon each person to lead a moral life and follow God’s will. The message of La Salette traces the “narrow road that leads to life” (Matthew 7:14), like the steep and narrow path the “Beautiful Lady” climbed before melting away in the light.

After the visionaries’ experience at La Salette, a Christian renewal transformed the region. In 1872, nationwide pilgrimages began to be formed across France. For roughly 150 years, La Salette’s spirit has been embodied in a movement that has gained convents, monasteries, congregations, and arch-confraternities. Christians everywhere saw or felt its influence. Saints (for example, John Vianney), pastors (such as Don Bosco), and religious writers (like J.K. Huysmans) have all been influenced by La Salette.

Though La Salette’s message is embedded in the bygone environment of the nineteenth century, rural France, it has had a tremendous impact on the modern world. The spirit of La Salette is one of prayer, conversion, and commitment.

Our Lady of La Salette

1846 Marian apparition in La Salette-Fallavaux, France

Our Lady of La Salette (French: Notre-Dame de La Salette) is a Marian apparition reported by two French children, Maximin Giraud and Mélanie Calvat, to have occurred at La Salette-Fallavaux, France, in 1846.

On 19 September 1851, the local bishop formally approved the public devotion and prayers to Our Lady of La Salette.[2][1] On 21 August 1879, Pope Leo XIII granted a canonical coronation to the image now located within the Basilica of Our Lady of La Salette. A Russian-style tiara was granted to the image, instead of the solar-type tiara used in the traditional depictions of Our Lady during her apparitions.

Places dedicated to Our Lady of La Salette outside of France include a sanctuary in Oliveira de Azeméis, in Portugal, a chapel in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, in México, as well as a national shrine in Attleboro, Massachusetts, and a shrine in Enfield, New Hampshire, in the United States, both known for their displays of Christmas lights.

History [ edit ]

Basilica of Our Lady of La Salette.

The Marian Shrine of Our Lady in the great mountain of La Salette.

In 1846 the village of La Salette consisted of eight or nine scattered hamlets. The population was about 800, principally small farmers with their families and dependents. On the evening of Saturday, 19 September 1846, Maximin Giraud and Mélanie Calvat (called Mathieu[3]) returned from the mountain where they had been minding cows and reported seeing “a beautiful lady” on Mount Sous-Les Baisses, weeping bitterly. They described her as sitting with her elbows resting on her knees and her face buried in her hands. She was clothed in a white robe studded with pearls; and a gold colored apron; white shoes and roses about her feet and high headdress. Around her neck she wore a crucifix suspended from a small chain.[4]

According to their account, she continued to weep even as she spoke to them, first in French, then in their own dialect of Occitan.[5] After giving a secret to each child, the apparition is said to have walked up a hill and vanished.

After five years of investigation, the Bishop of Grenoble, Philibert de Bruillard announced in 1851 that the apparition was likely to be a true revelation and authorised the commencement of the following of Our Lady of La Salette.[6][self-published source] This determination was later confirmed by his successor, Bishop Ginoulhiac.[7]

Message [ edit ]

According to the children’s account, the message of the Virgin was a call for the people of the world to return to God. She equated the people’s sinfulness to a harvest being spoiled.[6][self-published source]

John Vianney, John Bosco, and Joris-Karl Huysmans were all influenced by La Salette. The spirit of La Salette is said to be one of prayer, conversion, and commitment.[8] René J. Butler of the La Salette Missionaries of North America says “The whole purpose of the Apparition of Our Lady of La Salette was reconciliation.”[9]

Pope John Paul II stated, “As I wrote on the occasion of the 150th anniversary, ‘La Salette is a message of hope, for our hope is nourished by the intercession of her who is the Mother of mankind.”[10]

Father Hippolyte Delehaye, president of the Bollandist Society, saw in the words attributed to Our Lady of La Salette an avatar of the false Letter of Jesus Christ on Sunday (Carta dominica).[11]

Inquiry [ edit ]

France. Statue depicting Our Lady of La Salette crying in Corps, Isère

Sensation about Our Lady of La Salette arose when Mélanie and Maximin made their message public, which caused the bishop of Grenoble to investigate the apparition. During the investigation, a number of accusations were made against the visionaries, including the assertion that the apparition was actually just a middle-aged woman named La Merlière.[3]

Secrets [ edit ]

No mention of secrets is made in the children’s first accounts. The children later reported that the Blessed Virgin had confided a special secret to each of them. These two secrets, which neither Mélanie nor Maximin ever made known to each other, were sent by them in 1851 to Pope Pius IX on the advice of de Bruillard.[3][12] It is assumed that these secrets were of a personal nature. Maximin advised the Marquise de Monteyard, “Ah, it is good fortune.”[13]

Fate of the children [ edit ]

Maximin Giraud, after an unhappy and wandering life, returned to Corps, Isère, his native village, and died on 1 March 1875 aged 39. Mélanie Calvat died as a Catholic nun at Altamura, Italy, on 15 December 1904.[3]

Legacy [ edit ]

La Salette Shrine, Attleboro, Massachusetts

The Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette were founded in 1852 by Philbert de Bruillard, Bishop of Grenoble, France, and presently serve in some 25 countries.[14]

The U.S. National Shrine of Our Lady of La Salette is located in Attleboro, Massachusetts. Known simply as “La Salette” locally, it is famous for its Festival of Lights, held annually during the Christmas season, where the grounds are decorated with elaborate Christmas light displays.[15] The shrine is visited by over 1 million people per year and hosts many pilgrimages and retreats throughout the year.[16]

Our Lady of La Salette, Reconciler of sinners,

pray without ceasing for us who have recourse to thee.

A Prayer to Our Lady of La Salette: For Her Consolation and Ours!

A PRAYER TO

OUR LADY OF LA SALETTE

THE FIVE FIRST SATURDAYS IS A DEVOTION NEEDED NOW MORE THAN EVER! FIND OUT MORE HERE

Has our Blessed Mother often wept for humanity? We see her in this picture of Our Lady of La Salette in tears, as she was during her divine Son’s passion, mentioned below. With this prayer we can console her by seeking her help to live lives of holiness.

Remember, dear Lady of La Salette, true Mother of Sorrows, the tears which thou didst shed for me on Calvary; be mindful also of the unceasing care which thou dost exercise to shield me from the justice of God; and consider whether thou canst now abandon thy child, for whom thou hast done so much. Inspired by this consoling thought, I come to cast myself at thy feet, in spite of my infidelity and ingratitude. Reject not my prayer, O Virgin of reconciliation, convert me, obtain for me the grace to love Jesus Christ above all things and to console thee too by living a holy life, in order that one day I may be able to see thee in Heaven. Amen.

The picture above represents a most unusual apparition in which Our Lady of La Salette was seen by two children Melanie Mathieu and Maxim Giraud, in the small French village of La Sallette, located near Grenoble, on September 19, 1846. She first appeared emerging from a globe of light, weeping over our sins.

Mary then stood before the children, as in the picture at right, and gave them a message to share with the world. She said “For how long a time do I suffer for you! If I would not have my Son abandon you, I am compelled to pray to him without ceasing; and as to you, you take not heed of it!”

She continued that far too many people were offending our Lord with their impieties (such as working on Sundays instead of attending Mass) and general disrespect or indifference towards Him.

(She bemoaned at one point those who swore while taking “the name of my Son in vain.” Isn’t it true nowadays as well that some people only say Christ’s name in anger when experiencing some misfortune?)

Our Lady of La Salette warned of chastisements that would fall upon humanity if people didn’t change their ways. And indeed, Europe experienced a terrible harvest in 1847 that led to widespread famine there. Before ascending into heaven she urged the children to pray more and gave each of them a secret that was revealed to Pope Pius IX in 1851 concerning threats to the church and to the world.

In spite of her sober message, Our Blessed Mother meant for us to have hope in her Son’s Divine mercy, saying “if they are converted, the stones and rocks will change into mounds of wheat, and the potatoes will be self-sown in the land”, and many people soon made amends.

Miracles stated taking place at the site, as people were cured over various ailments from water from the spring there within weeks of Our Lady’s appearance. The Church officially approved of this apparition (deeming it worthy of belief) after much investigation and debate in 1851. Construction of a church at La Salette began in 1852 and was completed in 1865. (It was designated as the Basilica of Our Lady of La Salette in 1879.)

In the messages given Melaine and Maxim separately, our Lady of La Salette warned of great upheavals to come in the church and the world if people did not repent of their sins. Her words moved Pope Pius IX enough to say of them that “You wish to know the secrets of La Salette? Well, it is this: ‘If you do not do penance, you will all perish!’”

It is important to remember, however, that Mary sought at La Salette not just to chide us but to bring us closer to God. Our Blessed Mother has often been called our “mediatrix” with her Son our Lord Jesus Christ. By virtue of her essential role as the Mother of God in our Salvation, Mary is uniquely qualified to assist us on our journey towards Eternal life.

St. Alphonsus Liguori spoke for many other theologians (and popes alike!) when he referred to Our Blessed Mother as “the universal dispenser of all divine graces.” Given our fallen nature, God saw fit to give us His mother, the one human being born without the stain of Original Sin to be our “most gracious advocate” (as she is called in the Hail Holy Queen).

As long as we are genuinely penitent, we can always ask her to intercede with her divine Son on our behalf. And as St. Germanus once noted, Our Lord cannot refuse to grant his Blessed Mother’s requests!

In these turbulent times, as back in the 19th century, it is easy for us to get distracted and discouraged by our transgressions in this sinful world! Yet, as St. Pius X wrote a century ago “in the midst of this tide of evil, the Virgin Most Merciful rises before our eyes like a rainbow, as the arbiter of peace between God and man.”

Let us take to heart the essential message of this prayer to our Lady of La Salette to keep her close in our hearts as we seek to do Her Son’s will so that we may see her in heaven, as we read above, as we share Eternal Life with Him!

Day 3- Novena Prayer to Our Lady of La Salette

Let us begin, In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Amen.
