Historically when it came to staining concrete, there were acid stains and “other stains”. Reactive acid stains had been used on concrete for decades and really took over the market when it came to coloring concrete. With new chemistry and technology emerging and as the concrete stain industry grew, new products have been formulated and developed to compete with acid stains. These new products are water-based instead of acid-based and come in an assortment of colors. They are UV stable which means they can be used indoors and outdoors. Water-based stains are made up of water, water-based resins and paint-grade resins to allow for excellent penetration into concrete.
Differences between acid stains, water-based stains and solid color stains
Acid Stains: Most acid stains are a mixture of water, hydrochloric acid, and acid-soluble metallic salts. They work by chemically reacting with calcium hydroxide after penetrating the surface. The acid in the stain lightly etches the surface, allowing the metallic salts to penetrate more easily. Once the stain reacts, it becomes a permanent part of the concrete and won’t fade, chip off, or peel away. Acid stains leave a mottled surface appearance. They are available in select earth tone colors but can be mixed for additional color options.
Water-Based Stains: A new-generation of stain which blend pigments and acrylic polymers to penetrate concrete producing a translucent color. One of the biggest draws to using a water-based stain in replacement of an acid stain is safety. How to apply a solid color concrete stain:
Make sure the concrete is clean, dry and free of all previous stains or sealers. If the concrete was previously sealed make sure you strip, etch or grind off the previous sealer. If the concrete is porous or broom finished it is best to use a primer or a bonding agent to increase adhesion of the solid color concrete stain to the surface. Apply within the application temperature and weather parameters. If multiple gallons are being used, make sure to batch (mix) all units together to ensure uniform color. This can be done in a 5-gallon pail. Apply a coat of solid color concrete stain using a ¼”- 3/8” nap roller. Back roll and cross-hatch for complete and even coverage. Since concrete varies in texture and porosity, two coats may be required for a uniform color appearance. Optionally use an enhancer to highlight textures of stamped concrete. Use a topcoat sealer for added longevity and UV protection.

One of the many pros to Behr Solid Color Concrete Stain is its availability. Behr is a popular brand sold exclusively through The Home Depot. If you want to stain your concrete today you can literally walk into any Home Depot store, pick a gallon of Behr off the shelf and begin your project. But just because a product is readily available does not mean it is the best product for you to use. According to many customer reviews the product seems less durable than claimed, with a major complaint being how easily the product scratches and scuffs. Behr does offer a 1-year warranty to furnish an equivalent amount of new product or a refund of the original purchase. Although they do not disclose longevity of their product, it seems the product is intended to last less than one year.
Pro-Fusion 1505 Solid Color Concrete Stain Review
We recently came across a newer solid color concrete stain system: the Pro-Fusion 1505 – part of the Ghostshield brand. Ghostshield claims their product is, “A pigmented, water-based, non-yellowing stain system designed for unsealed concrete, masonry and pavers. Infused with nano-sized color particles, the 1505 concrete stain system will provide a much stronger bond than typical polymer stains. It penetrates deeper and self-crosslinks to promote outstanding adhesion.”
Since we always test out new products when they become available, we decided to try out the Pro-Fusion 1505. The Pro-Fusion 1505 solid color concrete stain is available in six color options. The Pro-Fusion 1505 enhancer designed for stamped concrete is available in three color options. After going through the entire recommended application process this is what we found.
The Pro-Fusion 1505 is considered a solid color concrete stain system. What this means is everything you need to successfully stain your concrete and have it last for many years is included in the system. However, you do not need to purchase all the items in the system. We purchased the Pro-Fusion 1505 primer, Pro-Fusion 1505 solid color stain in Tan, and the Cryli-Tek 5500 as the topcoat sealer. A topcoat sealer is required after applying the Pro-Fusion 1505. We did not purchase the enhancer as it is only recommended for stamped concrete. We were also informed that you can use the Pro-Fusion 1505 primer as the topcoat sealer, but we decided to go all out for the sake of this review.
Before the concrete stains arrived, we prepped a broom finished concrete patio. It had been previously stained with the Behr Solid Color Concrete Stain and then sealed with a solvent-based acrylic sealer. We made sure to strip it, pressure wash it and let it completely dry out. There were some old rust stains that were not removed and had always bled through the previous stain, so we were interested in seeing if the Pro-Fusion 1505 concrete stain was able to conceal them.
Once the products arrived, we chose a sunny day with the temperature around 70 degrees with low humidity to begin priming. We decided to use the primer because the broom finished concrete patio was older and very porous. The primer is not necessary for every application. If we were applying this system to stamped concrete, we would not have used the primer and would have just gone right to applying the solid color stain. We applied the primer with an 18” – 3/8” nap paint roller. We made sure we rolled in the same direction and let it dry for 24 hours before applying the solid color stain. We applied the stain as we applied the primer, with an 18” – 3/8” nap paint roller. We rolled one coat onto the concrete and after letting it dry, we applied a second coat. The two coats completely covered the old rust stain – you couldn’t even tell it had ever been there.
The old broom finished concrete patio now looked like a newly painted patio. The tan color left the patio looking like new concrete. The next day we applied the Cryli-Tek 5500 as the topcoat sealer. The Cryli-Tek 5500 is a low gloss, water-based, wet look acrylic sealer so it really gave the stain a nice durable finish.
We applied this system and it has held up great to foot traffic, BBQ grilling and salt water from a saltwater pool. We have not experienced any spalling or cracking from the salt water. If food spills on the patio, it is easily wiped away and grease from the grill hoses off nicely.
All in all, the Pro-Fusion 1505 was very easy to use. It may seem intimidating with all the different system options but for most people the solid color concrete stain and a topcoat sealer is all you will need. We were amazed that the stain was able to hide old rust stains. This is something that the Behr product had been unable to do in the past. Since Ghostshield is known for professional grade products we would recommend the Pro-Fusion 1505 over the Behr Solid Color Stain. After talking with the manufacturer, the Pro-Fusion 1505 had been under development and testing for over five years before it was made available to the public. As with all Ghostshield products the Pro-Fusion 1505 was tested in the field by their certified applicators, installers and contractors. We were given a list of Pro-Fusion 1505 project references to ensure that the product has been used in the field and is long lasting. What makes the Pro-Fusion 1505 unique is the Ghostshield nanotechnology. Infused with nano-sized color particles, the 1505 concrete stain system will provide a much stronger bond than typical polymer stains. It penetrates deeper and self-crosslinks to promote outstanding adhesion. Overall this leads to a longer lifespan.
The Pro-Fusion 1505 is currently available direct through the manufacturer or through Amazon. Although it is more expensive than the Behr Solid Color Concrete Stain, you do not need to be stripping, staining and resealing every year. It is a worthwhile investment for solid color stain protection.

Here’s what I discovered:
Wood stain can be used to stain concrete. However, wood stain will be like painting the concrete where it just sticks to the surface (which over time can scrape off). Acid stain, by comparison, leeches into the concrete and becomes part of the concrete.
But there’s a lot more to know about concrete staining and how wood stain works on it.

How do you use a stain roller on concrete?
Use a stain roller and a long extended pole to apply stain to concrete. Because stain is thinner than paint, don’t apply too much stain to the roller or it will drip excessively on the concrete. Roll in one direction only, and make sure to avoid overlapping lines.
For solid color concrete stain (the finished result will look more like you painted it), a roller works just fine.
You’ll want to start with a clean, washed, and dry surface.
As we get into below, you also want to wait at least 30 days if the concrete is new and was just poured. But if your concrete is prepped, clean, and ready to go, simply roll the stain on using long strokes of equal pressure.
Also, make sure the air temp is not too cold or too hot; between 50-90 degrees. 2 coats may be required for the best look.
All that being said if you are using an acid-based stain and/or a transparent or semi-transparent, I would recommend using a backpack sprayer rather than a paint roller.
It will go on smoother and easier and be less likely to show any lines.

How long must concrete cure before staining?
Wait at least 1 month after the concrete was poured before applying stain. Concrete needs to cure completely before staining or sealing, and the curing process allows the excess water in the concrete to evaporate.
If you don’t allow it to evaporate, then any stains or sealers won’t soak into the concrete and may end up flaking off.
However, some brands recommend up to 60 days, so always read the instructions (admittedly hard for some of us guys).
With most acid stains, concrete paints or sealers,
That being said, temperature, humidity, and how stiff the concrete was mixed all factor in too.
So to really be completely safe, I would wait 45 days. After all, what are another 15 days to ensure you end up with really beautiful stained concrete floors?

Can you stain over sealed concrete?
You can stain over sealed concrete. But, you can’t just apply the stain on top of the sealed concrete. If you do, the stain will likely flake off. So first remove the sealer on the floor and stain, or apply a thin layer of acrylic polymer-modified concrete on top of the floors and then apply new stain 24 hours later.
After all, an acid stain is designed to soak into the concrete, not just lay on top of it like a coat of paint.
Thus, if you have sealed floors and don’t treat them, the stain will just sit on the surface and be vulnerable to foot traffic and furniture.
So to apply a stain on sealed concrete, you really have 2 options to ensure it looks good:
Remove the sealer and apply the stain
Apply a thin layer (1/8″ thick) of acrylic polymer-modified concrete on top of the concrete and apply the stain to that (after at least 24 hours)

Removing sealer from a sealed concrete floor
This is not a fun job, just FYI.
To remove sealer from a concrete floor you can either grind it off by renting a floor sander from Home Depot or you can use a solvent-based stripper to remove it.
Solvent-based strippers (typically Methylene-chloride based) work quickly but as you would imagine they can be hazardous to breathe and dangerous if it gets on your skin, eyes, etc.
Thus make sure you have good ventilation and consider using a respirator.
Once it’s been applied, you’ll be left with a goo mixture on your concrete which must be completely removed.
Use a long-handled floor scraper and scrape the mixture up and dispose into an appropriate container and always follow your state’s regulations on disposal.
Then use hot water and liquid soap to thoroughly clean the floor.
Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry completely before proceeding.

Use a floor sander with 60 grit sanding screen over the entire floor. Grind for about 15 minutes using smooth constant slow movement for a room about 15’x15′. Rinse the floor with a gentle floor cleaner and allow to dry. Lay down a heavy coat of acrylic primer, using a long-handled paint roller. Wait at least 10 hours before proceeding with the next step. Add a 2nd, thinner coat of the primer. Allow it to dry to the touch. Apply the polymer-modified concrete overlay, such as Akona® Polymer-Modified Concrete Resurfacer, at 1/8″ thick. Apply using a trowel or long-handled squeegee. Wait at least 24 hours before proceeding with the next step. Apply the acid stain using a backpack sprayer. Follow the steps provided by the stain manufacturer, but typically you would allow it to dry for 3-4 hours before applying additional coats as desired. Once you have applied all the coats of stain you wish to apply, we need to neutralize the acid. We do this easily by simply mixing TSP and water and mopping it on and scrubbing it in. Then rinse with water only enough times to completely remove any residue. Use a wet/dry vac to suck up all the extra water. Allow your new stained concrete to dry for at least 24 hours. Then you can sealer using a water, acrylic or solvent-based sealer and wax if desired.
How much does it cost to stain concrete floors yourself?
The cost to stain a concrete floor yourself is going to start at about $500, including stain, sealer, backpack sprayer, and rental of a floor sander. The size of the room(s) and the condition of the current floor or subfloor can impact that amount significantly though.

That being said, which you could easily spend between $2,000-$5,000 hiring a professional, I spent under $500 staining my own concrete floors (a dining room and kitchen).

What is the difference between wood stain and concrete stain?
Wood stain is essentially like thin paint and will coat a concrete floor, sticking to its surface. Acid-based concrete stain, by comparison, chemically reacts to the concrete, and soaks in, becoming a permanent part of the concrete. Non-acid-based concrete stains are also more like paint.
So we know wood stain can be used on concrete.
That being said, I would personally not use wood stain.
While it’s true that places like Home Depot and Lowe’s don’t typically carry acid-based concrete stain, unless you live in the backwoods, most likely there is at least 1 store in your town that deals in professional acid stain products.
Alternately you can also order acid stain on the internet.
The reason I say no to “can wood stain be used on concrete” is that it’s coating the concrete more than becoming part of it.
Concrete is porous and the wood stain may soak in to a degree, but acid stain actually has a chemical reaction with the concrete that helps ensure a smoother and deeper bond between the stain and the floor.
If you absolutely have to use wood stain, just be prepared for it to flake off easily and to reapply it regularly.

How to Use Fence Stain on Concrete
Don’t use water as this will damage the brush. If you are staining an outdoor concrete surface, apply a stain waterproofing sealant using the 4-inch, oil-based paintbrush after you are finished applying the fence stain.
Never apply stain to a concrete surface until you have cleaned it thoroughly, or the stain will not be able to soak into the surface.
Ordinary, unfinished concrete can look drab and unappealing to many homeowners. However, you can transform dull, gray cement into something beautiful by applying a coat of stain. You can use most any kind of wood stain to coat concrete as long as you take the proper preparation steps to condition the surface to accept the coating. In addition, you may need to apply a water-proofing agent to the finish coat, depending on where the concrete is located.
Can You Stain Integrally Colored Concrete?
Can I acid stain concrete that already has integral pigment in it? We had our floor and shower just done in red-oxide tinted concrete and it ended up being pink! I want to change the color by applying an acid stain.
The short answer is, yes. Acid stain will work on any concrete, colored or gray. The big difference will be the final color. With plain gray concrete, you can more accurately predict what the final color will be. With colored concrete, the final outcome will vary and the only way to see what color you’ll get is to apply the stain to a test section. Find a small inconspicuous place, apply the stain, let it react, clean it, and see what the color looks like.
In regard to your particular situation, you may want to consider using a solid-color stain or water-based tint instead of an acid stain. These stain types are more opaque and do not react with the concrete. You can use a red stain or tint and change that pink concrete back to the red you originally desired. These tints are also easy to apply, and with the right sealer, will last the lifetime of the floor. Keep in mind that in a shower, you’ll need to use a sealer that holds up to moisture. Also be aware that most sealers get very slippery when wet, so consider using a grit additive in the sealer to make the floor slip resistant.
