Microsoft Silverlight may not work in recent versions of Google Chrome

In this article
This article helps you work around the problem that occurs when you use Google Chrome (version 42.0 or later) to access a website that runs Microsoft Silverlight.
Applies to: Windows
Original KB number: 3058254
When you use Google Chrome (version 42.0 or later versions) to access a website that runs Microsoft Silverlight, you see that some content is missing or that the Install Microsoft Silverlight badge is displayed. When you reinstall Silverlight, the issue still occurs.
Note This issue does not occur in Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, or Apple Safari. These browsers still support Silverlight content.
This issue occurs because these versions of Chrome block Netscape Plugin API (NPAPI) plugins from being displayed in the browser. Silverlight is an NPAPI plugin.
On Chrome version 45 or a later version of Chrome, there is no workaround for this issue. You must use a browser that supports Silverlight content to access a Silverlight page.
To work around this issue on versions 42 to 44 of Chrome, follow these steps:
On the address bar in Chrome, type chrome://flags/#enable-npapi . In the Enable NPAPI Mac, Windows box, click Enable. Exit and then restart Chrome. Reopen the Silverlight page. Right-click the broken puzzle piece image, and then select Run this Plugin.

Microsoft Silverlight is a powerful tool for creating and delivering rich Internet applications and media experiences on the Web. Silverlight 5 builds on the foundation of Silverlight 4 for building business applications and premium media experiences. Silverlight 5 introduces more than 40 new features, including dramatic video quality and performance improvements as well as features that improve developer productivity.
Silverlight End of Support
Microsoft will provide technical help for customers using versions of Silverlight 5 only. Paid technical help is available to customers requiring support with issues beyond install and upgrade. Microsoft will continue to ship updates to the Silverlight 5 Developer Runtime for supported browser versions given that their extensibility model supports plug-ins; this includes updates for security vulnerabilities as determined by the Microsoft Security Response Center (MSRC).
Silverlight 5 will support the browser versions listed on the system requirements page through October 12, 2021, or though the lifecycle of the underlying browsers, whichever is shorter. The support page will be updated to reflect compatibility with newer browsers and operating system versions.
Silverlight End Of Life: Here Are The Best Microsoft Silverlight Alternatives
When a successful platform or a product becomes obsolete, one of the main issues users face is to find an alternative that is compatible with all existing requirements. Technology obsolescence has adverse impacts on businesses. Staying up-to-date with lifecycle and version changes is vital for organizations to effectively address the challenges of obsolete technologies.
You might have faced such kinds of challenges in the past if you are using Microsoft products. Normally, when any leading software providers declare end-of-support of a product, it means users should not use the product because they will no longer provide support and updates, resulting in compliance, performance, and security issues.
Here, in this post, we are talking about Microsoft Silverlight which will reach the end of support on October 12, 2021. We will also cover top alternatives to Silverlight and detailed information on Microsoft Silverlight End of Life.
What Do You Need To Know About Microsoft Silverlight?
It is a deprecated technology. It is an application framework that enables developers to create rich web applications and media experiences. It is similar to Adobe Flash, an all-purpose plugin for executing rich multimedia applications, graphics, animations, and streaming audio-video to devices. It is a free plugin powered by the .NET framework and works with all major browsers, operating systems, and devices.
Note: Currently, it is only supported on Internet Explorer 11. Microsoft plans to terminate support for this last browser, IE 11 on October 12, 2021. Support for Chrome, Firefox, or any Mac OS browsers was already ended a few years ago.
Before we discussed what happened to Microsoft Silverlight and a brief history about it, let’s first quickly jump to the best Silverlight alternatives.
List Of Top Microsoft Silverlight Alternatives:
Let’s see each Silverlight alternative in detail.
It works with all modern web and mobile browsers and it is a part of ASP .NET Core. Blazor uses WebAssembly to execute client-side C# code directly in the web browser. Developers can reuse code and libraries from the server-side as well.
Blazor WebAssembly is a Single-page Application (SPA) framework for building, rich, interactive, front-end apps. Migration of Silverlight app to Blazor platform is easy as Silverlight is famous for its design pattern, MVVM (Model-View-ViewModel) which allows separation of concerns.
When it comes to the web, there is no stronger technology than HTML.
When Silverlight was launched in 2007, many developers and observers had predicted the future of Silverlight very early. While for web, Silverlight quickly became popular and on the mobile front, it was limited to Windows Phone only. It was the primary development environment for Windows phones.
Netflix had used Silverlight for streaming services but Netflix said that they moved to HTML5 Video after Microsoft announced end-of-life for Silverlight.
However, HTML5 and Silverlight are both different options and both have their own set of applications.
It is considered an open-source re-implementation of Silverlight. It runs on leading browsers with the help of WebAssembly and Microsoft Blazor. OpenSilver is considered the best alternative to Silverlight. Userware, a Paris-based software company has been working on it for over two years. One of their popular products, CHTML5, a free Visual Studio Extension is used to create HTML5 apps using C# and XAML.
OpenSilver is certainly not Silverlight but it offers a way of running Silverlight inside of modern browsers using Web Assembly instead of plugins. It is similar to Blazor, except that Blazor uses Razor syntax and OpenSilver keeps using XAML for its views.
Adobe AIR is a cross-platform runtime system for building desktop and mobile applications. AIR stands for Adobe Integrated Runtime that enables developers to create and deploy Flex, ActionScript, and HTML content as standalone desktop apps, native iOS, and Android apps.
It is currently being maintained and backed by HARMAN, an Adobe AIR partner and an independent subsidiary of Samsung Electronics Co. HARMAN offers a range of products and solutions for automakers, enterprises, and consumers worldwide. Adobe ended support for AIR in 2020 and ongoing support is now managed by HARMAN.
Apps developed in AIR can be deployed on Windows/macOS desktop platforms, Android, and iOS platforms. HARMAN focuses on enhancing the platform and improving the usability of AIR SDK.
AngularJS’s two-way data-binding and suitability to MVVM architecture – these two features are well appreciated by developers and it’s a pretty good choice for developing rich, interactive, and responsive web applications along with the use of HTML and CSS.
Modernizing Silverlight applications using React is a good option as both, ReactJS and AngularJS are by far the most successful platforms backed by giant communities. React Native, an open-source mobile app framework developed by Facebook is also immensely popular for building native-like cross-platform apps.
As Silverlight becomes deprecated, there are many options to migrate your code from Silverlight. Microsoft’s UWP and WPF can be used as alternatives to Silverlight. You can recreate your Silverlight apps using WPF in .NET Core.
WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation) is a UI framework to create desktop client applications. It offers a broad set of features and it is now an open-source project on GitHub. It was targeted for the Windows platform only and it is based on XAML, eXenstible Application Markup Language. However, WPF and Windows Forms are old and Microsoft is focusing on its Universal Windows Platform instead.
Well, choosing technology always depends on your requirements and timeline. You can choose a platform/language/technology that suits all your parameters. Modernization is a continuous process as one becomes old, the door for new opens.
Now we have seen alternatives, let’s learn what causes Silverlight to end.
What Causes Silverlight End Of Life: Here’s Everything You Need To Know
Do you know?
Silverlight was used to provide video streaming for the NBC coverage of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, and the 2008 conventions for both major United States political parties.
It was used in Amazon and Netflix for their instant video streaming services.
Chrome, sighting performance and security issues, ended plugin support. Following that, major browsers had discontinued plugin support. Microsoft released 5 versions of Silverlight over a period of time. Silverlight was built on WPF-based technology and is also known with its codename, WPF/E.
The rising mobile era and no support for browser plugins were the reasons why Microsoft ended Silverlight. The web was challenged to find something dynamic and powerful that works with a mobile environment also. This made Silverlight shut its operations and stopped development after the last major version on May 8, 2012.
As of May 2021, less than 0.03% of sites used Silverlight.

Using Silverlight in Chrome and Firefox
Using Silverlight in Chrome and Firefox Thursday, April 30, 2015 by Rainer Stropek
In 2013, Microsoft announced that they have ceased development of Silverlight except for patches and bugfixes. However, Microsoft will support Silverlight until October 2021, so in Internet Explorer https://login.timecockpit.com will continue to work well. In the newest release of Google Chrome (v42), you can still use Silverlight but you have to explicitly enable it. Below you will find instructions on how to enable Silverlight in Chrome and Firefox.
Moving From Silverlight to HTML5
We are working very hard to replace the Silverlight client by a platform-independent HTML5 client. Most of the functionality of time cockpit lists and forms is supported in the HTML5 preview already and since this month there is already a first preview of the time tracking calendar available. You can try the new HTML5 client at https://web.timecockpit.com. There will be updates every week, so come back regularly to see what’s new.
Enable Silverlight in Firefox
When opening https://login.timecockpit.com in Firefox you may see the following message:
Just click the link “Activate Silverlight” and time cockpit will be running.
Enable Silverlight in Chrome
Chrome disabled Silverlight by default in version 42. If you are using a version greater or equal 42 you will see the following screen when navigating to https://login.timecockpit.com:
This may have two reasons: Silverlight is not installed on your PC or the plug-in is disabled in your Chrome browser. To re-enable Silverlight you have to take the following steps:
Enter chrome://flags/#enable-npapi in the address bar of your Chrome browser. You will get the following window:
Click “Enable” in the section “Enable NPAPI” and then click “Relaunch Now”. All open Chrome windows will be closed and re-opened. Finally, Chrome will warn you again, that there are blocked plug-ins on this page. Click on the warning in the address bar, allow plug-ins for time cockpit and click “Done”:
After that, time cockpit will be working again in Chrome.
How to use Silverlight in Chrome on Windows 10
Watch the Video: How to use Silverlight in Chrome on Windows
Browser plug-in stalwarts know about the planned move to a plugin-free web by top Internet software companies. It has become increasingly difficult to access Silverlight content in the browser with every passing year. No browser has pushed back against NPAPI plug-ins as hard as Google Chrome. In fact, the option to even enable Silverlight in Chrome was removed by Google in September of 2015. Yet some Silverlight content remains on the internet. Those who want to display it using the web’s most popular web browser are at a loss. But not a complete loss. It is still possible to use Silverlight in Chrome on Windows 10 with a free extension.
The IE Tab extension for Chrome is not only useful for displaying web pages with Silverlight content, but also for Sharepoint, Java and ActiveX content too. Until which time it becomes impossible to use these technologies, holdouts can still view Silverlight content within the Chrome wrapper. IE Tab emulates Internet Explorer within a Chrome browser window. The extension uses the Internet Explorer rendering engine so you can view Silverlight content. Caveat: IE Tab works on Windows only.
Pay a visit to the Chrome Web Store
Launch Google Chrome. Next, visit the IE Tab page in the Chrome Web Store. Click the blue Add To Chrome button. A dialog will display asking you if you want to Add IE Tab, accompanied by a list of functions it can perform. Click the Add extension button.
Once installed, the IE Tab icon displays next to Chrome’s address bar/omnibox. Click the icon to open an IE Tab. In the IE Tab, input the web address of the page that contains Silverlight content. For example, visit the Silverlight verification page on Microsoft’s site with Chrome using an IE Tab.
When using Chrome without IE Tab, Silverlight cannot be detected. A notice that, “You are running on a browser that may not be fully compatible with Microsoft Silverlight,” displays instead.
For those who don’t want to bother with adding an extension to Chrome, switch to another browser. Your choice on Windows 10 to view Silverlight content is…(you guessed it) Internet Explorer.

How do you enable Silverlight in Google Chrome version 42 and later?
SuperUser contributor TD.512 has the answer for us:
In September 2013, Google announced its decision to move away from support for NPAPI (the Netscape Plugin Application Programming Interface). In Google Chrome 42, NPAPI is disabled by default, thus disallowing plugins like Silverlight and Java. Threat Report explains: “NPAPI’s 90s-era architecture has become a leading cause of hangs, crashes, security incidents, and code complexity.” There are other APIs that companies like Microsoft and Oracle can use to modernize their web-plugins and one can expect them to be updated to support these alternative options. But for now, as per this article from Microsoft, Microsoft Silverlight may not work in recent versions of Google Chrome, so you will need to do the following: Paste this into Google Chrome’s address bar: chrome://flags/#enable-npapi Select Enable When using the website (Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, etc.), you will need to right click on the content and select Run this Plugin (Optional) Laugh at Google Chrome for underestimating SuperUser

Silverlight not working with chrome
Chrome no longer supports Silverlight. Rather, Chrome no longer supports the underlying protocol that Silverlight relies on, NPAPI. At the moment they have just disabled NPAPI, You can reenable it by:
Entering chrome://flags/#enable-npapi in Chrome’s address bar Clicking ‘enable’ under ‘Enable NPAPI’ Clicking the ‘relaunch now’ button.
Once you do that, the Silverlight plugin will be available again in the plugins section (along with many other plugins). This is only a temporary solution, however, as they plan on removing that option entirely by, I believe, September.
I have read elsewhere (see this article by Chris Merriman) that Microsoft’s response was that there are other Silverlight capable browser alternatives to Chrome. I think you can take that to mean that Microsoft has no intention of creating a new Silverlight plugin for Chrome that does not rely on NPAPI. In other words, Chrome will likely never support Silverlight again.
NPAPI was completely removed from Chrome in version 45 released on Sept. 1st 2015. It is no longer possible to run Silverlight (or any other plug-ins that rely on NPAPI) in Chrome.
